So much to love

When they illustrate neurons with empty outlines and maybe throw in a nucleus, they are leaving out most of the fascinating details of how neurons actually work. Those details can be found here!
I just finished my undergrad in cell bio/biotech and hope to go to grad school in a field involving neural science, so I bought this book to get a head start. Now I wish I'd bought it earlier in my undergrad career, as I find learning details helps with retaining information.
For a textbook of this size and with this much information, it is quite reasonably priced. I think splitting it into two volumes would have been a wise move, as you can't really lie down and read it without being crushed by its weight.

Wealth of Knowledge and Awesome Diagrams

The book Principles of Neural Science by Kandel et. al. has been a fantastic compliment to the class I’m currently enrolled in at Iowa State. The immense amount of knowledge contained in the book enhances my learning and has helped to develop my understanding of neural science. The diagrams in the book are well illustrated and display the contents of the book effectively. This is a required book for graduation in my discipline and is for advanced learners only. The subject matter within the book might be difficult to grasp without some prior knowledge of neural science.

The information in this book is outstanding and is unlike any other neural science textbook that I have read during my college career. With that said, the book is very “heavy”, in both weight and content. I haven’t weighed it myself, but it is the heaviest textbook I have had in my four years of college. However, with the relevant amount of information in the book, it is a price I’m willing to pay!

I would recommend this textbook for people seeking an advanced education in the field of neural science. The book has complicated information, but with the detailed diagrams and case studies provided, the reader gains a better understanding of neural science.

The quality of this book is uneven accross. Some chapters are not good.
There is a lot to improve about this book and there are many mistakes that I could find and I assume that some I couldn't.

Yet, It's a very good place to start. I've come to it after reading hundreds of neuroscience papers because I realized there are too many subjects I lack a proper frame to understand.

Anyway, it's a must-study for every neuroscientist everywhere, as other reviews clearly say.

After this what you read depends on the sub-specialty you wanna do.

GGE Biplot Analysis: A Graphical Tool for Breeders, Geneticists, and Agronomists introduces the theory of the GGE biplot methodology and describes its applications in visual analysis of multi-environment trial (MET) data and other types of research data.

The text includes three parts: I) Genotype by environment interaction and stability analysis, II) GGE biplot and multi-environment trial (MET) data analysis, and III) GGE biplot software and applications in analyzing other types of two-way data. Part I presents a comprehensive but succinct treatment of genotype-by-environment (G x E) interaction in order to provide an overall picture of the entire G x E issue and to show how GGE biplot methodology fits in. Part II describes and demonstrates the numerous utilities of a GGE biplot in visualizing MET data. Part III describes the "GGE biplot" software and extends its application to the analysis of genotype by trait data, QTL mapping data, diallel cross data, and host by pathogen data. Altogether, this book demonstrates that the GGE biplot methodology is a superior data-visualization tool and allows the researcher to graphically extract and utilize the information from MET data and other types of two-way data to the fullest extent.

GGE Biplot Analysis makes this useful technology accessible on a wider scale to plant and animal breeders, geneticists, agronomists, ecologists, and students in these and other related research areas. A Great Formula for Success!!

After reading, listening or watching all the other Law of Attraction stuff out there... this book helps to fill-in-the-blanks that were missing, or unmentioned in the other publications. Also, I like how brief the sections or chapters are... Make your point and move on to the next. Great stuff! Most others seem to go on & on just to support their assumptions, or prove a point. Jims' style is Very Good! So, if you are looking toward the New Year, and are thinking about Goal Setting... Read this book, and you will get a fresh perspective or alternative to the standard (or old) way of getting there from here. Now go "Get What You Want".

Couldn't get past the writing...

I really wanted to like this book. I'm familiar with a lot of Jim Edwards work and he has some great things going on, but about 37% of the way through this book I just got so frustrated at trying to 'read' it that I gave up and deleted the book from my kindle.

Between the typos, the half sentences and the constant repeating of the same sentences it just took too much effort to get through this book to see if there was anything of value in it (which I'm sure there is knowing some of his other work).

I will try other Edwards titles as I know he has some good points/ideas, I just hope they are better written than this one.

To me, Jim Edwards is a modern day Earl Nightingale...a man worth listening to.

Don't you just get annoyed with all this self-improvement rubbish? It seems that every day somebody is coming out with '5 steps to this' or '7 steps to that'. As I get older I realise that I learn more from people who speak, and more importantly ACT from a position of authenticity and real life experience. Someone who's really been where I want to go. Let me get one thing clear, by real life experience I mean someone who 'walks the talk'...and doesn't go around saying they know it all.

Jim Edwards is such a man.

I can't begin to imagine how much time and money I've wasted listening to the so called "self help" gurus. The situation got so bad that I made a pledge to not to buy another self help book, course, etc until I've thoroughly research the author. 99% of people don't make the grade unfortunately. Anybody who has made a career out of self improvement I dump immediately!!! These guys have no real life and business experience. They make a living out selling worthless claptrap by making things complicated. Since 2006, I decided to only listen to people who succeeded in something other than self improvement. Guys like Earl Nightingale and Frank Betger or Steve Jobs or Richard Branson.

Jim Edwards is a man worth investing time to listen to because he knows how to explain and share information in such clear terms. For example, I love the way he explains the 7 universal laws. For the first time I "get it" because he shows how he observes the laws and how he APPLIES them. I know he applies them because I've seen him do it again and again in REAL LIFE in his REAL business in the way he exchanges value with others. I've been a recipient of the value he has exchanged with me (many multiple times in fact).

I recommend you go through all his True Life Success lessons. They have become the cornerstone of my own life and business because Jim has shown me a true way forward.

Thanks Jim...I owe you big time :-)

We know that women made up a significant part of Renaissance theater audiences but how might they have read the plays presented there? This book uses the writings of sixteenth and seventeenth century women to construct a feminist perspective on drama by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Middleton, Ford, and their contemporaries.

Chapters are arranged thematically on key issues or genres. Women's religious compositions open up readings of plays like Doctor Faustus and Measure for Measure as interrogations of conventional beliefs which underpinned relations between men and women. Chapter 2 considers drama from across the period, including The Spanish Tragedy, The Revenger's Tragedy and The Maid's Tragedy, to show how revenge tragedy taps into deep fears and desires about women's agency and maternal power. Comedy, the female romantic quest, and the city as a site of female pleasure, are examined in diverse texts such as All's Well That Ends Well, The Duchess of Malfi, The Roaring Girl and Epicoene. Chapter 4 focuses on the household space as a specifically female form of imprisonment, analyzing Romeo and Juliet, Arden of Faversham, The Tragedy of Mariam and The Changeling and other domestic tragedies in the light of Renaissance women's experiences. The final chapter discusses queenship, subjects and women's interventions into masculine history.

About the Author
Alison Findlay is a lecturer in English at Lancaster University, specializing in feminist approaches to Shakespeare, Renaissance Drama and women's writing of the early modern period.

A tragedy of a technicist

This book is one of the most important novels (although Frisch calls it "report") in German language, and I like it immensely ALTHOUGH it is being treated in German lessons, and I was shocked when I read the review in which the reviewer writes that the translator left out the criticism of the "American Way of Life" (one of the most important parts in the development, I think: Walter Faber, the main person, is sitting in Cuba, enjoying tropical thunderstorms and swears about America because it "destroyed the white race". This was also the attitude of an archaeologist he had met six months before and he didn't understand it at all).
I won't tell you all the story because it's like in a criminal novel: you shouldn't know the end because if you knew it, you would read it with less attention. The main thing is that Walter Faber, an engineer who is absolutely hostile towards feelings, women etc., is overwhelmed by some happenings he would never have considered to be possible. He changes his views radically and becomes a real tragic person.
Frisch's use of foreshadowings makes the reader feel the tragedy even more closely, but in his language, there are some weak points (the detailed technical pieces of information which Faber, the 1st-person-narrator, uses), which have been transformed into a wonderful parody (called "Frener") by Robert Neumann.

The Techniker finds his soul

I read this book in the German and enjoyed it immensely. Walter Faber, a globe-trotting engineer, uses technology and his scientific worldview as a shield against other people and against his own humanity. When his shield fails him, he learns to open his heart and live fully. Regardless of whether you share Frisch's opinions about science, the book is beautifully written. Walter Faber is both horrifying and touchingly sympathetic. Despite the tragic plot, the strength of the novel is its small comic moments, of which there are many. If you just watch the movie (even the German-language adaptation, which is much more faithful to the book than the American film), you will miss almost everything that is worthwhile about Homo Faber. Read the book! (In German, if possible.)

The birth of one man's passion for life

This is my all-time favorite book! I read it as an undergraduate German major - in German, of course! The story has so many messages - how what we don't face will come back to us; how much of life we miss when we're to afraid to live it; how things become more intense and beautiful when love is in our hearts. The characters are developed in such a loving manner that I found myself liking and sympathizing with all, despite their faults. I think that this book makes a great summer read.

Contrary to the prior review, I would not recommend the movie based on this book. I was very excited when I heard that Sam Shepard was tackling this project, but I was ultimately disappointed. There is no replacing the real thing!
