This surprisingly toothless final volume of the Dragon Star fantasy trilogy (after The Dragon Token ) reads more like a melodramatic Russian play than like an epic adventure tale. Pol, sorcerer and High Prince of the Desert, must come to terms with his fanatical cousin Andry, High Lord of Goddess Keep, so the two can pool their magic and influence to defeat a barbarian horde that threatens their people. While Pol and Andry strike an uneasy truce in Pol's castle, surrounded by the intrigues and agonizing of their friends and relations, far away the High Warlord of the barbarians holds Pol's wife and child hostage. The major characters languish passively in their lush surroundings while the reader learns of desperate battles for survival through occasional off-stage reports, a device that makes the entire conflict seem unreal. Rawn writes fluidly and creates reasonably complete characters, but there's not enough action to justify the book's excessive length. The tragic climax, when it comes at last, is lost amid the general angst suffered continuously by all.

The epic ends - and it's so satisfying!

The epic ends - and the body count is high - you almost wonder if George Martin read this and thought - I can kill more characters.
Some you're cheering as they die, others you're crying, and with some, you're surprised at your reaction. The characters are real as they struggle to find a way to defeat an enemy that has won nearly every battle. Pol struggles with being High Prince as he starts to understand what his parents tried to tell him, repeatedly. I did want to smack him with how he was with Meiglan, and Sionell, and even Sioned. And... oh, read it.
Start with Dragon Prince and lose yourself in an amazing six-book story of an incredible land.

Outstanding, insightful series

The 3 books each in the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series are some of the best written, most vididly imagined and deeply reflective of human nature that I have ever encountered by fiction authors. Melanie Rawn is a master at interweaving stories, personalities and elicting emotional responses from the reader. The saga begins with Rohan and Sioned, his Sunrunner Princess, as they face overcoming an evil High Prince Roelstra and his nest of scheming daughters plotting to capture the world with the aid of an enemy, the Merida, a group of assassins with the prize of the desert promised them for their help. They are assisted by various corrupt petty princes whose goals are increasing their wealth and holdings. Rohan, the brilliant intellectual prince of the desert is hereditary protector of the dragons who live there and return their love and interest. Rohan is beneficiary to the secret, unlimited wealth of dragon gold which is unknown to, but coveted by, the other petty princes. Rohan succeeds in overcoming Roelstra's evil rule, establishes fair trade and writes the law codes for the land when he becomes High Prince, and peace ensues for years. Throughout the stories the author uses delicious humor and repartee between principles in a most engaging way. The Dragon Star series continues the saga with Rohan and Sioned now in the background and the focus is upon their son Pol's ascendancy toward his eventual position as High Prince. Pol faces many inner conflicts as he struggles to become a prince like his father, and a husband to a fragile, helpless, cowardly and weak wife. He has married Meiglan, instead of Sionell, his soulmate and childhood friend whom he later realizes was the woman best suited to him. On top of his personal wars he is thrust into a world war by invading barbarians who are both superstitious, and religiously fanatical. The Vellant'im sole purpose is to destroy all inhabitants, especially the High Prince and the Sunrunners to pay back evil done to them by an unknown group of evil sorcerers hundreds of years in the past. The struggle for survival is bittersweet and poignant. The sub theme of religious beliefs vs sorcery and magic, and the conflict between Pol and his cousin Andry, the Lord of Goddess Keep whose goal is to dictate beliefs and what constitutes sin and to set himself up as judge and jury keep emotions high. Andry's parents, brother and kin and Andry's own children must chose between him or Pol while trying to work together to save themselves from facing annhilation by the enemy. The many subplots of individuals forced to face their own personal and power struggles while facing the Vellant'im is fascinating and makes these stories rich and textured. The dragons aiding humans in peril present a compelling picture of those special protective, loving bonds between man and animal. The author has captured the indomitable spirit of mankind and their non human friends in a battle to survive being conquered by overwhelming forces in an inspiring, engaging and unforgettable way.

About the Author
Deputy Assistant Chief John Norman is a veteran of more than 35 years in the fire service, with a wide range of experience. He has fought fires in rural, suburban, and urban settings. Since Sept. 11, 2001, Norman has been the Chief of Rescue Operations with the New York Fire Department. Until that date, as a Battalion Chief, he had been assigned to the 16th Battalion in Harlem. In the days after the collapse of the Twin Towers, Norman was designated as the Search and Rescue manager for the World Trade Center site. He operated in that position as a member of the Incident Commanders General Staff for two months before assuming his assignment as the Chief in Charge of the Special Operations Command on a full-time basis. The key to successful hoseline selection is to look at the situation briefly before taking any hose off the apparatus. Make sure that the line stretched is appropriate for the task. Far too often, firefighters have stretched an inappropriate line because "that's the line we always stretch." This often involves stretching booster, or red, lines into structures, a totally unsatisfactory solution. In at least two large departments, the administration is so strongly against this practice that the booster lines have been removed from the apparatus. Stopping short of such drastic measures means that the members riding on the pumper must be able to make the right choice based on the situation at hand.
Regardless of the method of attack you choose or the type of stream you employ, two criteria determine whether your effort will successfully extinguish the fire. The first is that the amount of water discharged be of sufficient volume to remove the heat being generated. The second is that the water actually reaches the heart of the fire and not be carried away by convective currents or turned to steam. These two criteria combine to determine what size hoseline will be appropriate.
The first consideration, required volume, is relatively simple. In fact, formulas that can predict the required amount of water flow have been devised based on the volume of the area and the weight of the fire load. These formulas, discussed in chapter 2, vary from 10 gpm for every 100 sq ft in a low fire-load setting to 50 gpm per 100 sq ft for high fire-load areas. This is determined by the amount of heat that the fuel can produce. Materials vary as to the amount of heat they give off. For instance, one pound of wrapping paper will give off about 7,100 BTUs, whereas one pound of styrene foam gives off about 18,000 BTUs. In this case, the styrene foam would require about 2� times more water to extinguish than would the wrapping paper. Still, in either case, if you don't apply enough water, the fire won't go out. Simply stated, firefighters must apply enough water to absorb all of the heat being given off or the fire will continue to extend. (Water absorbs about 9,275 BTUs per gal when raised from 70� to completely vaporized, so in the case of the pound of wrapping paper, a little less than 1 gal of water would be required to cool the burning paper, while nearly 2 gal would be required for the same one pound of styrene foam, assuming complete vaporization.)

Very good resource. I read it cover to cover just to see if I knew as much as I thought I did, and of course I learned a great deal. THis 3rd edition is a little "old fashioned" and so the fourth edition may be a better choice.

Purchased for promo exam, great info for all firefighters. A little long winded, but flows well.

Deducted one star because new edition has been released. How about instead of releasing a new edition for upwards of $70, just release a more cost effective supplement to last edition?

from what is used in our region. Nothing against the author but I wish the people who pic

Cute Book, but Not Entirely Accurate

With a 6 year old at home and a baby on the way I'm always on the look out for good picture books that we'll be able to read together both now and when the baby arrives. Because we are also a Christian family, finding books that teach kids about God is always a plus. For both of those reasons I was excited to learn about the Train `Em Up series and to have the opportunity to review Tell Me about Prayer.

The Train `Em Up Series, created by Stephen Elkins, uses train travel to take children on a journey to learn about a variety of theological concepts. The CD is filled with the same story as the book, but contains many fun songs performed by children. Tell Me About Prayer also comes with a sheet of stickers that little ones would enjoy.

My 6 year old and I read this book at bedtime the other night and while he enjoyed it, I do think it is a little young for him. This book talks to kids about what prayer is and even teaches them the Lord's prayer which is definitely beneficial for them to learn. I like that it tells kids that prayer is how they can talk to God but I didn't like some of the phrasing. The book tells kids that prayer is not a way to ask for what we want but is about trusting God to provide the us with what we need, which is not exactly true. Prayer is a way to deepen your personal relationship with God and while a big part of that is learning to depend on Him to provide us with what we need, this is also a way to ask for things that we want. The key to that is, in my opinion, realizing that what we want isn't always what is best for us so God doesn't always say yes.

This book is a great starting point for teaching kids about prayer and we will probably read it again with our baby when he is old enough, but I think it should be the beginning of a conversation with your kids not the whole story. Trusting God to provide what we need is not what prayer is, it is a by-product of a mature faith. Telling kids that they cannot ask God for things that they want through prayer seems to me to be prohibitive to their budding relationship with the Lord and may even make them not want to pray at all.

All in all, I think the idea behind this book is fantastic, but the execution is poor. I would still give the other books in the series a try though as they are cute with good illustrations and my son enjoyed reading this one.

Audience ~ Part of the Train ‘Em Up series, this paperback targets ages four to seven years old. Although it has some complicated wording, it may be best read by an adult to a beginner reader.

Contents ~ Inside the front jacket is a musical CD containing ten songs plus the read-out-loud story. One full-page of small stickers is at the beginning of the book. Seven chapters are included, containing words of three of the songs on the matching CD. Written out Bible verses are noted from the New Living Translation along with the NIV, CEV, ISB, ISV, and KJV versions. A prayer completes the book.

Author ~ In addition to writing many children’s books and songs, Stephen Elkins is a Grammy Award-nominated music producer. His deep voice is animated and cheerful on the CD.

Illustrator ~ The colorful designs by Zeglin and Taylor-Kielty cover the pages with dotted-eyed children and animals complimenting the storyline. Brightly colored backgrounds have blue, green, or white font wording that is easy to read.

Characters ~ Although there are no specific characters, many of the scenes depict young children, usually dressed in Biblical costumes. David from the Old Testament and Jesus are mentioned.

Description ~ Each book in the series has chapters titled: Now Leaving for Bible Land, Discovery Land, Story Junction, Bridge of Song, Learning Station, Decision Depot, and Prayer Place. As this one focuses on how to pray, it shows that by talking and listening to God, a best friend is available. Including the Lord’s Prayer, prayer is asking God for the things needed and thanking Him for providing them. Bible verses from I Samuel, Psalm, Proverbs, Matthew, John, and Philippians, I Thessalonians are added.

Pros ~ One of the highlights of the series is that the musical CD comes with complete train noises as “Conductor Steve” reads the book so one can follow along. Interjected are children’s energetic voices. The five question test titled, “What Have We Learned about Prayer,” reiterates what the reader has learned.

Cons ~ Only three of the songs on the CD are written out in the book so some may have to hear the songs often if they do not know the words. Some of the wording in the book may be too conceptual to a preschooler. The version of the Lord’s Prayer is not well-known and does not include the last verse.

Opinion ~ By teaching young ones that they have a personal relationship with God, prayer is encouraged. Even if the child does not comprehend he or she can talk to God instantly, the included CD with songs would be enjoyed by those who love songs about God.

8 Reasons Our Family Loves the Train ‘Em Up Book Series

Here’s what we loved about it:

1. A train conductor named Steve narrates the story. They just won over my son for sure! It’s complete with all the important train “noises” you would expect from a “choo-choo” adventure.

2. The overall concept of prayer is a difficult one for kids to understand but the book is broken down into simple explanations about what prayer is and what it’s for.

3. There is a sticker page. All kids love stickers. No more explanation needed!

4. My daughter is just now learning to read so listening to the words and following along in the book was an academic exercise in addition to a spiritual growth one.

5. In addition to the narration and music included in the book there are extra songs at the end that support the concept discussed.

6. Kids sing the words but I found myself impressed with the quality of the background music behind the words. Let’s just say with kids music, this isn’t always the case.

7. The Train ‘Em Up book series covers a variety of sometimes challenging topics on a kid’s level. Other topics include: Tell Me about the Bible, Salvation, Church, Baptism, Faith, Grace, and Praise & Worship.

8. The books are affordable. With each one priced at $5.00, these make fabulous birthday or Christmas gifts!

**I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars because the book talks about how prayer is not a way to ask God for things we want, but to trust him to give us what we need. While I understand the concept the author is trying to get across, the Bible clearly tells us to ask. Sometimes the answer is "no" or "not now" because it's not what's best for us in the long run, but still, we are definitely told to ask.

"Red Robin: 7 Days of Death" Graphic Novel Review

Over a period of 70 years, the Batman Family has grown from the tight-knit little group of the superhero, his trusty butler Alfred, and sidekick Robin to include dozens of extended family members from all over the world. There are six different versions of the Boy Wonder alone. Most have grown up and taken on their own alter egos to fight crime; sometimes side-by-side with the Dark Knight and other times while trying to get out from under his shadow.

Tim Drake is one of those individuals and his adventures were chronicled in the monthly comic series Red Robin in 26 issues between 2009 and 2011. "Red Robin: 7 Days of Death" collects issues 18 through 21, 23 through 26, and Teen Titans #92. It's made up of 4 different stories or sections.

If you enjoy exploring the lives of Batman's extended family members, "Red Robin: 7 Days of Death" will appeal to you. It's also a great way to catch up on an underrated superhero and affordably collect the last few issues of the title in one book. Fabian Nicieza's intricate plot threads and Marcus To's stellar art make this a recommended read.

This trade collects Red Robin issues #18-21 and 23-26, and Teen Titans issue #92.

Red Robin has a new target: a secret online net for villains that increases both their communication and power but may be benefitting someone else even more. His efforts to deal with this and yet more assassins bring excruciating choices and actions questions by even his closest allies.

Nicieza does an incredible job wrapping up the series given the constraints. The opening three part "Down the Rabbit Hole" (with two part "On the Shoulders of Titans" interlude) gives Tim a worthwhile new focus, reunites him with his former team against a classic foe, and foreshadows side effects of his choices.

The following three part titular story features the culmination of Red Robin's meddling in the affairs of various assassin groups with a tournament underway and clues towards a new(?) enemy secretly manipulating everything from the shadows. The effect of the impending cancelation to make way for the New 52 is felt as plot points and fights that normally could support the better part of an entire issue are reduced to single page summaries, but the main plot of this arc is allowed to develop naturally and the number of long running story elements and characters tied together here is amazing and much appreciated as the series winds down.

It ends with the moment Nicieza's been building to since his run started as Tim Drake goes after his father's killer. This story was obviously meant for more than a single issue, but is condensed well and remains true overarching purpose of the entire series unilluminating who Tim Drake has become and what he does when faced with impossible situations. The various opinions of other Bat-family members was pitch perfect and laid what would have been a great foundation for future stories.

While I'm disappointed DC's grand plan for their universe cut this wonderful comic short and that the various fascinating story threads being foreshadowed were doomed to "what if" status, the stories being told here were given satisfactory conclusions, the series never lost sight of its main focus, and 7 Days of Death is a suitable send off for this captivating incarnation of the Tim Drake character.

Tim Drake is a great character, one of my favorites. Fabian Nicieza is usually a good writer, and he certainly was with this one. Great writing, beautiful artwork, and an amazing central character. Batman and/or Robin fans will not be disappointed.

About the Author

Nancy H. Ramage is the Dana Professor of the Humanities and Arts Emerita at Ithaca College, where she was department chair for eleven years, and where she won the Excellence in Teaching Award.� She was a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University, and is now a life member of that college.� An art historian who specializes in Roman art, she also writes and lectures on the history of collecting, and on the influence of the Romans on 18th and 19th century decorative arts.� She was an academic trustee of the Archaeological Institute of America, and was head of their lecture program for several years.� She serves on the governing board of the Wedgwood International Seminar, and on the Council of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, where she received her doctoral degree. �Professor Ramage has worked at the Archaeological Excavations at Sardis, Turkey, for many years, and has written about the sculpture and pottery from that site. Among her numerous honors and awards, she has been a Getty Museum scholar, a recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, London.

Andrew Ramage is professor emeritus of the History of Art and Archaeology at Cornell University, where he was previously Director of the Archaeology Program and Chair of the Department. He previously taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Massachusetts in Boston. At Harvard University, where he earned his doctorate, he was keeper of the coins at the Fogg Art Museum. He is Associate Director of the Harvard/Cornell Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, in Turkey, and is writing a book about the houses and workshops of the early Lydians who lived there. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University.� The Ramages have written several books together; they have six granddaughters.
