Anima Mundi by Mark Ryden

Beautifully produced full color book covering Mark Ryden's illustration and painting career. Cover title design printed in gold foil. Published in 2001, this book was limited to an edition of just 10,000 copies and is already out-of-print and a collector's item on the secondary market. Word has it that book distributors had sold out of this in just 1 month. This item is not to be missed by Mark Ryden fans and collectors.
Even scarcer than Anima Mundi was the release of the book BUNNIES AND BEES published in December of 2001 to coincide with the exhibit of the same name. This was published in a beautiful large format, 9 x 12, 50 pages, and contains Mark Ryden's work done after Anima Mundi making it an essential Ryden item. This was limited to just 8,000 copies. The paintings in this book are perhaps the best yet from Mark Ryden.
For the Ryden art collector, there's also the limited edition boxed set of the Anima Mundi book. Limited to just 500 sets, this contains the Anima Mundi book signed and numbered by Mark Ryden on a special limitation page not found in the normal edition; a signed and numbered giclee print titled "Sick Girl" which is reproduced in the book; an Anima Mundi bookmark, all packaged in a beautiful fabric box.

Nice Book, But Don't Go Broke On It

Anima Mundi offers a nice sampling of Mark Ryden's work up to (but not including) his Bunnies and Bees exhibition artwork which is his best work so far. Some of his nice tiki themed images aren't here, and there's a number of commercial illustrations that I didn't care for. But overall a nice selection. It's his only retrospective book collection so it's your only choice right now. Although a quick seller, the book is being revised and improved for its second printing so don't spend too much cash on a 1st printing is you have to have one now, the 2nd printing will be the better buy when it comes out. Honestly, the cover price on this was $[money] and amazon's price was $[money]. So to pay $[money] plus some people are asking for is crazy!

A must have art book

This is a great introduction to a visually arresting artist. If you like Juxtapoz type stuff, you'll love this book. But don't pay the crazy prices sellers are asking on ebay for this baby (I mean, they did print 10,000 of 'em - so how rare can it be?!?) but instead wait for the second printing which is suppose to be in the works.

"There are many of us," writes Nick Lyons, six decades on the pond behind him, "for whom a day on the trout river is so pleasant an event, such an amiable and engaging pastime, that it feels, both going and coming back, as comfortable as an old shoe. We go for the sheer joy of it, not to put notches on our rods." Anglers keep returning to Lyons's finely honed prose for precisely the same reason. The collection of essays that comprises My Secret Fishing Life is a personal journey into the various "rivers" he's waded as a husband, father, teacher, writer, collector, publisher--and, of course, as a fisherman, the single noun that manages to tie all these lines together. The shorter pieces of the first half, many of which were originally published in Fly Fisherman magazine, explore subsets of the fishing life, drifting casually between philosophical rumination and memoir: the rituals of preparing for a new season, getting older, a lunchbreak spent fishing for stripers in the waters off Wall Street. In such sketches he presents his languid yet alluring phrases as delicately as if they were flies to a rising trout. Here he is on the inherent purity of the dry fly: "The only possible practical argument for using the dry fly more frequently is Lee Wulff's--that the dry fly fished on a floating line grants for the trout the sanctuary of its part of the river, allowing the connection to take place only at that place where air and water meet, and only at certain times." Two longer pieces comprising the book's second half are less successful--maybe too personal here and there (especially a windy defense of his wife's painting career), but overall it's honest, thoughtful work. Like fly-fishing as a sporting enterprise, the writing casts more toward the journey than the destination, allowing itself to hook into a share of verities along the way. --Jeff Silverman

Within the pond of those who write about fly-fishing, Lyons is one of the bigger fish. He has authored 16 titles (In Praise of Wild Trout, etc.) on the evidently inexhaustible subject and has published others' books on the art and mystique of fly-fishing. This is his most introspective book yet: "I have tried to find more of what my professional life has amounted to than ever before and more of my personal life." That he had a personal life at all is amazing given that, for 13 years, he was a full-time editor at Crown, taught five courses at Hunter College (where colleagues looked askance at his fishing articles and books, unable to see what such low-brow pursuits had to do with his professorship), ghostwrote four books and continued with his own writingAand had four children. He later started a book-packaging firm, Lyons & Burford, which became an independent house; now he heads Lyons Press. Even so, Lyons found time to go fishing, and there are plenty of fish tales here, spiced with references to Hesse, Twain, Melville, Max Planck, Byron and others. Lyons succeeds at what he sets out to do: show how the various loves and obsessions of a life interlock. Fly fishers and publishing folk alike will welcome the effort. In a marvelous passage, Lyons describes his discovery of the voice with which he first wrote about fishing, as opposed to the one he employed as an English professor: the new voice was "earthy, nimble, wry, full of wit and worms and celebration." He's still got it.

The authors fishing life is hardly a secrethes been writing about it for over 30 years. His revered essays are a regular feature on the back pages of Fly Fisherman magazine and have been compiled in several acclaimed books, including A Flyfishers World (LJ 5/1/96). The title of this book, another compilation, acknowledges that Lyons has had coexisting vocations as a Hunter College English professor, author, and editor/publisher throughout most of his adult life and that angling has simply been a passionate avocation that added a more meaningful perspective to everything else. His departures from piscatory tales offer readers thoughtful musings on aging, art, and publishing. Highly recommended for public libraries.Will Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.

Nick, Mari, Tony & Sparse: highly personal matters

Mr. Lyons, whose books (both edited and written) fill a significant portion of my fly fishing library, has written a very personal book.
The title is accurate at many levels. I doubt that many of us
would share so much about our personal lives - or that we would be able to do so with such candor and joy.
Mr. Lyons description of the travels (and travails) of a special copy of Sparse Grey Hackle's Fishless Days, Angling Nights is worth the price of the book.
Fishing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty between morning appointments is an incredible story (especially to this former New Yorker ... the Hudson off of NYC was dead in the 60's & 70's).
I never seem to find any time to fish. With this little book, I have a guide of how to find (or take) a little time here and there for fly fishing. Thank you, Mr. Lyons, for your guide to blending avocations with vocations.
Mr. Lyons sold his publishing company recently. May he and his family enjoy many years of post-publishing / editing repose and adventure. We may be lucky enough to have a second volume: perhaps a guide for the next twenty years?

An interesting and personal view from the author of his perceptions, feelings and thoughts about his fishing life - from youth to elder fisherman. His observations are thought provoking and in many instances mirror many thoughts I have had on fishing and how change has occurred over our life of fishing many waters, meeting different folks and how we have changed. Very good book.

Excellent review of "Playing the Akai EWI5000 Electronic Wind Instrument"

The author is absolutely correct about the Akai manuals. While technically solid and, I am sure, accurate in all respects, they are also very 'hard to digest' by those of us who have not had prior experience with synthesized music. The writing in this piece is clear and concise. Mr. Zwa apologizes for English not being his native tongue, but I found his presentation to be clear and precise. It would certainly never be challenged on those grounds. As a college professor who has read thousands of student papers over the years, I feel well qualified in making that assessment. The content here is excellent and, in my opinion, does a nice job 'contextualizing' technical matters. Again, this is something that I, as an amateur musician without much technical knowledge of the electronic musical world, appreciate very much. Still, I must admit that I will have to be re-reading portions of the book a number of times to grasp the technicalities being discussed. That is a limitation on my part, however, and not one of the publication. All in all, I would say that "Playing the Akai EWI5000 Electronic Wind Instrument" has been very well crafted.

I was looking for information on how to play the EWI 5000. Unfortunately this book has a huge portion dedicated to the history of the EWI, comparing it to the Yamaha WX, How the tones are generated electronically, how the Bite works electronically, how the note keys produce sound, etc. There was very little on actually what each button is for and how to play it.
The Author is obviously an expert in his field but I need some low level help on how to play the EWI 5000.

Michael E. From 1995-2005, he was a tenured professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Administration and Counseling, College of Education, at California State University, Long Beach. Professor Bernard has worked as a consultant school psychologist helping families and schools address the educational and mental health needs of school-age children. He has spent extensive time counselling children with emotional, behavioural, or academic difficulties. Professor Bernard is a co-founder of the Australian Institute for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and is the author of many books on REBT. For eight years, he was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Rational-Emotive and Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy. Great read on implant dentistry!

Must-read for those interested in implant surgery. With easy-to-follow, colorful illustrations, this well-organized book thoroughly discusses essential principles of comprehensive implant dentistry with emphasis on challenging anterior/esthetic cases, different approaches to bone grafting/soft tissue manipulation/flap designs and their limitations. Highly recommended!

I have never seen such an atrocity in life, that those poor SICK inmates had to endure ! This was a small scale holocaust, for the Mentally Ill population.

The doctor & guards were as sick as the inmates. I was involved with the jails at those times. I did counseling for mentally ill then and still do now. About the Author

Keith Haviland is a partner in Accenture. He is the lead author of UNIX Systems Programming, a successful guide to this major operating system first published in 1987, which according to Amazon has been hot in Albany, New York. His specialist areas include UNIX, technical architecture, e-commerce solutions and technology, and software solution delivery excellence at all scales. Most importantly, Keith has four energetic children who all clearly belong to the digital era.

Every C project I do, I use this book

a college professor in college made us buy this book for his class, and i'd give him a big kiss on the lips if i saw him today, because this book has helped me a lot. that statement says a lot, because i am a dude, and i'm not a fan of kissing other dudes.

you will not find huge examples of code in this book. there are no big projects in it. what you will find is a great breakdown of a lot of UNIX functions for C, and small, detailed examples of how to use them. it has everything from how to handle time, how to use sockets, how to read/write data to files, and a lot of other things.

sometimes when you're working on a project, you forget the little things, and you will ask yourself something like "how do i make sure a file exists before i try to read it in?", or "how do i use a semaphore again?". this is the book that answers all of those little questions that you will have over the course of a project.

A second look

After reading more I decided to keep the book. I changed my rating from two to four stars. I want to be fair to the book; It is much better than initially stated. In terms of the source code... it is not too much of an issue; the code is compact and to the point (still better if they provided the code).
I did buy Practical UNIX Programming and are using both books. Along with UNIX System V Network Programming by Rago, I have the necessary stepping-stones into the Steven's Books (TCP 1-3, Advanced UNIX, UNIX Network Programming Vol1-2, etc).

Terrific introductory text

If you're looking for a comprehensive (but not exhaustive) and pedagogical introductory text on system programming, and find yourself intimidated by other books, such as Stevens' Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, then this would be a wise choice. The explanations are clear and it has lots of simple examples to illustrate the concepts. After you work through this book, you'll be ready for the more serious and exhaustive texts (like Stevens).
