Not My Favorite, But Still Good

For anyone who (also) didn't read the second book, this is a prologue of sorts to the whole series, as the primary story occurs three-ish years prior to Beauty and the Beast. I guess I'm still a little confused as to that, but I like the story enough to ignore it.

First, this wasn't what I expected, but I'm glad. I ways support gender-bending traditional fairy tales, and Gabrielle is a fun lead, a young woman who is strong when we meet her and only grows stronger. Even though she doesn't like people, she still manages to show them compassion and empathy, and she's hard-working and down-to-Earth. She's sensible, likeable, and well-written. Gabrielle joins the line of kicka$$ heroines from books 1, 4, and 5. (I have not read 2 or 3, so I won't comment on their female leads.)

Puss is the character that I would consider the deuteragonist (which may be good or bad, considering.) He's just as fun to read as Gabrielle, and he provides a strong foil to her character. They highlight each other well, and he's the best cat I've ever read about. Like another reader, I hope to read about him meeting Elle and Severin.

Steffen's presence was weak in the novel. Now, since this was my first encounter with him, perhaps he had more character development in 2. Here though, in terms of presence and importance, Steffen was the fairy tale princess to Gabrielle's hero. He popped up when the plot called for it, but he never moved past slightly arrogant, hot-and-cold Crown Prince. Gabrielle and Puss dominated this book, and Steffen felt more like a flat side character than the love interest. I liked the way the proposal scene went at the end, but the epilogue confused me. Again, maybe reading the second book would really have helped, but it was like, "what do you mean you weren't affectionate, Steffen?"

So while I liked the heroine and her magic cat, this book read as more of an adventure than a romance, probably mostly because Steffen was just never really around. I'd be fine with that, but I think K. M. Shea was still going for a strong romance, not just an adventure.

My favorite female character in the series...and the most idiotic romantic interest

I've read all the books in the series but the The Wild Swans, and while I really enjoyed the others, I just ended this book with a bitter taste in my mouth. The characters of Gabrielle (her romantic leanings aside, though I admire her heart) and Puss were possibly my favorite in the series, but they were ruined by that debbie downer of a prince, Steffan.

One of the things I particularly liked about the previous books was how the main characters looked past the exterior (even though it's a little tiring that each and every one of them except Belle is "exotic" and "the most beautiful/handsome woman/man"), emphasizing how love is not just a temporary feeling, and something that needs to be constantly worked on. While that was emphasized in this book through dialogue, it wasn't really shown.

For one, the main characters, with limited interaction, fall in love over the space of what, seven action packed days? Secondly, love at first sight nor not, Steffan is an idiot. Although some reviewers complained of his not being such a central part of the book as other romanic interests in the series have been, I was actually glad of this - I thought he was insufferable and immature. I appreciate the fact that the author tried to give him some more human failings than the previous romantic interests, but with the particular failings she gave him, I did not see the connection between him and Gabi that the author kept telling us was there. I kept hoping Gabi would realize what an idiot the prince was and that Puss would turn out to be a man (but not a noble or mage, please!) under a spell, since they actually had a real relationship, and a fun one at that.

I also noticed some problems with stringing the tales together smoothly, particularly with Gabi running off to the ogre the second time right after the conversation with Steffan, and then the very quick and easy solution to the ogre.

So, while I truly enjoyed the characters of Gabi and Puss, the idiocy of Steffan and some tale-stringing problems made me finish this book dissatisfied.

Puss in Boots was one of those classic bedtime stories that everybody grew up with in childhood, and, like any fairy tale, there’s a certain challenge in making it stand out from its original counterpart. I’m starting to believe that Ms. Shea could nail it with her eyes closed and a hand tied behind her back. Her writing style is engaging, witty, and seamlessly draws the reader right into the story. The overarching plot of the evil takeover is thoroughly expanded upon in this book and we even get a peek into what happened to Enchanter Everest (whom I’ve determined at this point I don’t wholly trust).
Furthermore, her world building is fascinating and beautiful. I’m always thrilled when I see the fairy tales within fairy tales that pop up in her books. In addition to Puss in Boots and The Six Swans, we have allusions to Hansel and Gretel, The Golden Goose (would that make Steffen the princess who never laughed?), Rumpelstiltskin, and I’m pretty sure there’s even a reference to The Bremen Town Musicians in there! She always manages to throw in as many references as possible, and then some, and I absolutely love it!
Gabi is a delightful main character. I loved the banter between her and “Puss”. Coming from a small town, I can really relate to her wanting to get out, see the world, and have adventures. I was a little disappointed with how much she reminded me of Gemma, but that can be ignored if one focuses a little more on the plot and a little less on the characters themselves.

Overall, I would say that Dr. Clare Shaw’s book titled Nutrition and Cancer is very informative and insightful. It is also an easy to follow book as there are heading and graphs to assist the reader. The book is significant to me and my writing as it provides a great amount of knowledge on cancer, proper nutrition, nutritional support, treatment, screening, research and more. She addresses how maintaining a nutritional diet is essential to a patient’s survival, ability to function, and ability to recover from their disease. Also how a patient’s nutrition requirements can differ and change depending on their “tumor site, burden and staging, treatment options, the inflammatory response and genetic predisposition” of their cancer (Shaw, p. 115, 2010). One drawback is the lack of nutritional research presented and available in the text. However, Shaw did specify that there is a need for more research on nutrition in cancer patients.

I believe that Shaw’s intended audience varies from professionals such as dietitians, clinical nutritionists, doctors, and nurses to researchers, students, and of course cancer patients. The book is beneficial to each as there is information everyone can take away. However researchers, students, and cancer patients would probably benefit more from the read as they probably lack the most knowledge on the topic. All in all, I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the topic or needing scholarly information on the topic.

It explains what things are for those who are not scientists/dietitians, but is geared more for the professional. I have a degree in molecular biology, nursing, and I have been working in this industry for some time, so it was quite an easy read for me.

About the Author
Richard Bausch is the author of twelve novels, including In the Night Season, Hello to the Cannibals, and Before, During, After. He has also written eight collections of short stories, among them a Modern Library edition of selected stories, The Stories of Richard Bausch, and most recently, Something is Out There. In 2012, he won the prestigious Rea Award for the Short Story. Bausch teaches creative writing at Chapman University.

Terrific Anthology

Too often, fiction anthologies look exactly the same because they rely on the same old stories: Joyce's "Araby," John Updike's "A&P," Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily." And even when these conservative, non-risk-taking anthologies try and embrace more contemporary voices, again, the choices tend to be the same: Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," Alice Walker's "Everyday Use," Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl." Don't misunderstand me, many of these often-anthologized stories are terrific, but as an English Instructor, I grow frustrated with anthology after anthology that fails to stand out.

Even though Norton is a giant in the field of literary anthologies, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the content of the Norton Anthology of Short Fiction was a terrific mix of old and new. Better still, editors Richard Bausch and R.V. Cassill often choose fresh stories that haven't been anthologized to death. Thus, instead of publishing Margaret Atwood's terrific (but too-anthologized) "Rape Fantasies," they instead include "Death by Landscape." Instead of Bernard Malamud's "The Magic Barrel," they include "Angel Levine." And although the classic heavies are well-represented (Faulkner, Hemingway, Gilman, Chopin, Poe, Chekhov), there's a healthy (and I mean HEALTHY) dose of fantastic contemporary writers: Stuart Dybek, Barry Hannah, Amny Hempel, Louise Erdrich, Bharati Mukherjee, and on, and on, and on. And unlike other weak anthologies that I've seen, where the editors try to fold in contemporary voices but pick weaker stories by those voices, Bausch and Cassill have carefully selected fine, fine contemporary works. The instructor, student, or general reader who chooses to slowly make his/her way through the stories in this collection will be rewarded with a nuanced, broad vision of fiction's landscape.

A writer's anthology

Writers, especially beginning writers, interested in short stories should take a good glance at this anthology. The book draws from a wide selection of international literature leaning towards the contemporary (stories written within the last 20 - 30 years) rather than the modern or classics of the short story genre. The beginning briefly covers some common ideas about action, plot, complication, point of view, indirection, the part and the whole and coherence followed up by questions suitable for classroom discussions. The bulk of the book comes from stories chosen by the editors who wish to believe that even if you bother to read every selection in the book, you as a reader may finish reading the book but the book, the stories themselves may not be finished with you, their ideas staying with you long after the book has been sold back to a college usedbook store or disposed of in some other way. Finally, the last hundred pages deal with writing literature criticism as well as the act of writing itself in short, brief excerpts written by several of the writers who are included in the collection. Although it is on the pricey side, it is a good reference for those interested in short story writing. Another anthology to consider is The Art of the Story edited by Daniel Halpern which is much less expensive and more contemporary than the Norton Anthology.

The short stories in this collection are excellent. However, I wish that at the end of each story, there would be 2-3 questions to help guide the reader's analysis. Some of the stories are really out there and I sometimes found myself puzzled upon completing a story. Some of the stories have an accompaning essay which analizes the work. However, these essays are scarce. Even worse, the essays are attached to short stories that are well-known such as the "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. There is plenty written about these famous stories that can be found on the internet. The less famous stories, which don't have accompaning essays, have almost no criticism written about them. A couple "guide questions" at the end of the story would not have added much to the length of the anthology. Of course, if you are using this collection in a college course, you don't need analysis included in the collection because your teacher or class discussion can help clarify the story.
Another problem I have with the collection is that the date the story was written are not included with the story. The dates the stories were written are contained in a separate section of the book. Thus, it is annoying to flip to this section and then to flip back to the story itself.
At the beginning of each story, the editors of the collection have included a short synopsis about the author's life and writing career. This adds much to the collection. The editors also include helful footnotes that explain era-specific words and phrases. The anthology also contains useful essays regarding writing about short fiction.
Overall, this book is wonderful. Hopefully in future editions, my concerns can be addressed.

Average Audio Program from Self-Improvement Master

Personal Power Classic Edition is nowhere near as good as the Personal Power 2 (PP2) audio program (both are now out of print). Tony's voice isn't quite as good here and it is somewhat disorganized compared to PP2. Mostly Personal Power Classic seems like a repeat of Tony's other programs. Tony doesn't take it to the next level despite the tremendous success he has had in his life since the older program was recorded. I would admit that it is a little better than Get the Edge. This program contains 7 CDs (one for each day of the week). Tony talks about the power of decision, role models, pain and pleasure, Neuro-Associative Conditioning (NAC), goal-setting workshop and the 6 Human Needs. The CDs for each day: 1) Key to Personal Power, 2) Pain and Pleasure, 3) Power of Associations, 4) Three Steps to Lasting Change, 5) Goal-Setting Workshop, 6) Driving Force, and 7) Rapid-Planning Method.

If you haven't heard it this info is worth listening to but done better in Tony's other programs. Also see Awaken the Giant Within for Tony's best book. This edition is better than Get the Edge (which it comes packaged with). Both Personal Power Classic and Get the Edge seem like compact and less effective versions of Personal Power 2.

A must Have.

This is not just another positive thinking, feel good plan that you forget about after a week. This is a step by step life changing plan. I recommend this to anyone that has tried other self-improvement programs only to be disappointed. Tony (I feel like I know him personally) doesn't just talk about success he actually tells you how to change the way you think, so that you will start taking action. Procrastination starts to become painful and action becomes pure pleasure.

Personal Power Classic Edition

Warning!! The 5 star rating is for the author but the company that sent it to me should get an "INCOMPLETE". The minute you get this product listen to the first few minutes of EVERY CD. You will probably find at least one either defective or a duplicate of one or more of the others, even though they are correctly labeled. Three of us bought this set and all three of us have either a duplicate cd or blank cd in our sets. I received the product promptly and promptly discovered that tape 7 was defective, an associate found #7 (labeled as #7) to be same recording as #2. All three of us have sent the company emails advising them of the defects and requesting replacement CD's and as of today (over a month later) none of us have received a replacement CD nor an acknowledgement of any kind. Since I travel extensively it is very inconvenient to return the entire product for a refund but I will get to it ASAP. NOW, ABOUT THE PRODUCT. EVERY MESSAGE ON EVERY CD is motivating and filled with reminders of how to think and feel if you want to get things accomplished and it is delightful to feel his dynamic personal energy and enthusiasm coming through the speakers as I gobble up hundreds of miles of asphalt every month. Because I travel between my offices in AZ and CA I like to fill (and feel) my mind with motivational material rather than negative talk radio or music during some of the 7 hour drive. Tony is one of the dynamic people I love to treat my spirit to. All but two of his products are very very good. The others are still in the "Good" zone. Too bad the company making this product is so unconcerned about customer service.

Clear, Actionable, Research-based Advice

As a psychologist and marketer, I've been a long-time fan of Roger's blog and was excited to see him finally write a book. Brainfluence strikes a great (and rare) balance between being research-based and academic while still being clear and actionable. The market seems to be flooded with one or the other - academics who can't communicate, or marketers who only have opinions with nothing to back them up.

I've read many of the classics, like Cialdini's "Influence", so I was pleasantly surprised to find not only new data in Brainfluence, but new ways of looking at that data. The "100 Ways" approach made for a great collection of real-world examples and I definitely walked away with some ideas for my existing clients.

At least 100 great fundraising ideas

I'm a fundraiser, not a commercial marketer, but I've found this book to be indispensable. If you're a fundraiser, and you prefer to base your fundraising on facts and science (as opposed to your own hunches and superstition), this is the book for you. It focuses on practical marketing takeaways from neurological research. There are 100 short chapters, each with a neuroscience finding and how it might be used in marketing.

I came away from this book with more than a hundred ideas I can test or just put to work in fundraising. If even a small percentage of these ideas improve results, my clients stand to make the price of the book hundreds of times over in the coming months.

Like any science, neuroscience research is extremely technical; the findings are hard for us non-scientists to understand, much less put to work. Brainfluence bridges the chasm between the research and the marketplace. It's an easy, quick, enjoyable read, and you'll get ideas you can use.

Sound business advice backed by research!

The great thing about the web is that you can find answers to almost anything online. The problem is there's a lot of mis-information out there. Theoretical advice over what works and what doesn't and a lot of it isn't backed by much proof. Some would be expert tells you, "don't do that, it doesn't sound like a good idea." Here's the thing though, I want to know why. Why isn't it a good idea? What do you recommend? And why?

What I love about "Brainfluence" is that it answers the "why." It's a solid book, full of great insight that can be applied to various areas of your business. What's more is it's backed by research. And that's what I love about this book. It's like having my own personal business coach giving me sound advice, backed by research, over the various aspect of my business from pricing strategy to building trust with customers and potential customers. Definitely worth a read!
