Ragtime Jubilee: 42 Piano Gems, 1911-21 (Dover Music for Piano)From Brand: Dover Publications

The decade 1911–21 was the booming adolescence of ragtime. A dozen or so years had passed since the first ragtime publications, and this ear-catching, toe-tapping piano style was gradually coming into its full flowering. Driving this evolution was the increasing interest of a new breed of composer-pianists whose involvement refreshed old ragtime forms and contents and raised keyboard technique to new levels. Rhythms became more inventive, textures more interesting, harmonies richer, and glittering keyboard "stylings" became the rage of the new decade.
This rich collection of ragtime gems — all composed between 1911 and 1921 and compiled by noted popular-music authority David A. Jasen — contains 42 delightful piano solos, including: "The Aeroplane," "Angel Food," "Blame It on the Blues," "Clover Club," "Crazy Bone Rag," "The Foot-Warmer," "Hungarian Rag," "That Madrid Rag," "The Midnight Trot," "My Pet" (a Zez Confrey classic), "Pork and Beans," "Rooster Rag," "Rufenreddy" (Roy Bargy's big hit), "That's-a-Plenty," "Whipped Cream," "Wild Flower Rag," and 26 other hits of ragtime's most inventive decade.
Reprinted here form rare sheet music, complete with original covers, these old-time tunes offer a nostalgic look back to a fabled era in American musical history. They will delight piano players and audiences alike.

Some Gems, Some Forgotten, All Worthy
By William G. Edwards
In fact, this collection shows some of the best development of ragtime towards the end of the era outside of the classic rags of Joplin, Scott, Lamb and Matthews. It also demonstrates to some extent the output from Tin Pan Alley, as well as a few dance tunes. There are challenges (Rufenreddy and Pork and Beans), great experiments (My Pet), parodies (Operatic Rag, Hungarian Rag and Russian Rag), and just plain good music (Midnight Trot, Hot-House Rag, etc.). Not all of these will challenge the average pianist, and some are actually easy to work out. Plus 42 pieces at this price? Some of them would take many years and many dollars to obtain now. Get the book instead. Thank me later! You can hear many of these pieces on my site as well.

The best ragtime book I own.
By S. Taylor
I am a 14 year old pianist from Australia.

This is, hands down, one of the best ragtime compilations in existence. It is really the only Dover book which explores the later ragtime well enough. Also, unlike half of the ragtime books on the market, it doesn't bore you with half of the book being Joplin rag after Joplin rag.

This book is one of the few to actually explore 'novelty ragtime', which is ragtime, but trickier and more original.

My favouite pieces in this collection are 'My Pet', (by Zez Confrey, an under-appreciated genius)and 'Rufenreddy', (by Roy Bargy, a pioneer in novelty ragtime). Unoriginal, boring rags are not found in this collection, except for a couple.

There is really something for everyone in this collection. Some of the rags are quite easy to pick up (Blame it on the Blues, Haunting Rag), some are moderate challenges (My Pet, Hungarian Rag, Russian Rag), and some provide quite a challenge (Pork & Beans, Rufenreddy).

There is something to stun any audience and to delight any pianist. This makes for a beautifully well compiled, well rounded collection.

If you can, buy it - it's worth every cent.

A great collection of Ragtime
By Clyde D Perry
This is a must-have for the moderately advanced Ragtime piano player. David Jasen has included a variety of styles of Ragtime from that time period, ie. One- and Two-Step, Fox Trot, etc., so you're sure to find music to suit your tastes. The selections are a delight to play and impressive when heard, especially "Rufenreddy" which is my favorite. Forty one of these selections are new to my collection of over 400 Ragtime pieces in nine books. The only duplication is "Pork and Beans" by Luckey Roberts.

Review

“Agile coaches, you’re gonna be happy with this book. Kenny Rubin has created an indispensable resource for us. Do you have a manager that just doesn’t ‘get it’? Hand them this book and ask them to flip to Chapter 3 for a complete explanation of how Scrum is less risky than plan-driven management. It’s written just for them–in management-speak. Want to help the team come to a common understanding of Scrum? The visual icon language used throughout this book will help you help them. These are just two ways this book can aid you to coach Scrum teams. Use it well.”
–Lyssa Adkins, Coach of Agile Coaches, Agile Coaching Institute; author, Coaching Agile Teams

“One of the best, most comprehensive descriptions of the core Scrum framework out there! Essential Scrum is for anyone–new to or experienced with Scrum–who’s interested in the most important aspects of the process. Kenny does an excellent job of distilling the key tenets of the Scrum framework into a simple format with compelling visuals. As a Scrum coach for many teams, I continually reference the material for new ways to help teams that are learning and practicing the framework. I’ve seen Scrum continually misinterpreted and poorly implemented by big companies and tool vendors for more than ten years. Reading this book will help you get back to the basics and focus on what’s important.”
–Joe Balistrieri, Process Development Manager, Rockwell Automation

“Corporate IT leadership, which has been slow to embrace agile methods, would benefit immensely from giving a copy of this book to all of their project and delivery managers. Kenny Rubin has laid out in this book all the pragmatic business case and process materials needed for any corporate IT shop to successfully implement Scrum.”
–John F. Bauer III, veteran of technical solution delivery in large corporate IT shops

“Kenny’s extensive experience as a consultant, trainer, and past managing director of the Scrum Alliance is evident in this book. Along with providing the basics and introduction to Scrum, this book addresses the questions of masses–what happens to project managers? Essential Scrum helps us understand the big picture and guides how organization leaders can support and be involved with their Scrum teams for successful agile transformations.”
–Sameer S. Bendre CSM, PMP, Senior Consultant, 3i Infotech Inc.

“If you’re new to agile development or to Scrum, this book will give you a flying start. The examples and descriptions are clear and vivid, and you’ll often find yourself asking a question just before the book addresses that very topic.”
–Johannes Brodwall, Principal Solution Architect, Steria Norway

“Kenny’s well-structured explanations have a clarity to them that echoes the sensibilities of Smalltalk–the development environment with which he worked for years and from which both Scrum and Extreme Programming were born. This book pulls together a thorough set of agile management principles that really hit the mark and will no doubt guide you toward a more effective agile approach.”
–Rowan Bunning, Founder, Scrum WithStyle

“There are lots of books on Scrum these days, but this book takes a new angle, a reality check for software practitioners. Kenny uses real-world examples and clear illustrations to show what makes a solid foundation for successful agile development. Readers will understand the value of building quality in, and the reality that we can’t get everything right up front; we must work incrementally and learn as we go. It might have ‘Scrum’ in the title, but the book leverages effective practices from the larger agile universe to help managers and their teams succeed.”
–Lisa Crispin, coauthor, Agile Testing

“Kenny Rubin managed to write the book that I want everyone associated with Scrum development to read! He covers everything you’ll need to know about Scrum and more!”
–Martine Devos, European Scrum Pioneer and Certified Scrum Trainer

“I’ve reviewed a number of agile books in the past few years, so the question of ‘Do we really need another one?’ always comes to my mind. In the case of Kenny’s book, I very much believe the answer is ‘yes.’ Getting the benefit of different, experienced perspectives on commonly encountered and needed material is valuable. Kenny has one of those valuable perspectives. One unique aspect of the book is an interesting ‘iconography’–a new icon language for Scrum and agile that Kenny has created. I believe you’ll find value-added material in this book to expand your ideas for how Scrum can be applied.”
–Scott Duncan, Agile/Scrum coach and trainer

“Anyone who has had Scrum training or has been part of a Scrum team will find Essential Scrum to be a great follow-up read. It dives into the details of how to become more agile through implementing Scrum processes, and it explains exactly how to break down complex projects into manageable initiatives (or ‘sprints’). Kenny Rubin provides a wealth of relevant case studies on what worked–or what didn’t–in a variety of organizations. The simple layout and businesslike graphics make it easy to scan quickly and find specific topics. Any organization that is seeking to evolve from a traditional waterfall approach toward a more agile methodology will find Essential Scrum a definitive guidebook for the journey.”
–Julia Frazier, product manager

“Developing software is hard. Adopting a new way of working while in a project is even harder. This book offers a bypass of many of the pitfalls and will accelerate a team’s ability to produce business value and become successful with Scrum. I wish I had this kind of book when I started using Scrum.”
–Geir Hedemark, Development Manager, Basefarm AS

“I am convinced that Essential Scrum will become the foundation reference for the next generation of Scrum practitioners. Not only is it the most comprehensive introduction to Scrum in publication today, but it is also extremely well written and easy on the eye with its fantastic new visual Scrum language. If that isn’t enough, Kenny shares a range of his valuable personal insights and experiences that we can all certainly learn from.”
–Ilan Goldstein, Agile Solutions Manager, Reed Elsevier

Real-world experiences coupled with enlightening illustrations make Scrum come to life. For senior managers and team members alike, this is a must-read book if you are starting or considering whether to implement Scrum in your organization. This will certainly be a book recommended to my students.”
–John Hebley, Hebley & Associates

“Kenny unpacks a wealth of wisdom and knowledge in Essential Scrum, providing valuable and comprehensive insights to the practical application of agile/Scrum. Whether you’re new to agile or are looking to reach a greater maturity of continuous improvement in your organization, this is a definitive handbook for your toolbox.”
–David Luzquios, Head of Agile Enablement, Agile Coach, Betfair

In one hand he holds the formal or ideal Scrum definition and in the other, the pragmatic application of it. He brings the wisdom of his workshops and years of experience to the table, and now for you to read in his latest book. If you are about to start out on your agile adoption journey or are seeking guidance midcourse, grab a copy.”
–Cuan Mulligan, freelance coactive Agile coach

“A decade after publication of the first Scrum books, it is time to combine the essential aspects of the Scrum framework with the practical experiences and approaches of the last ten years. Kenny Rubin does so in a satisfying and nondogmatic way. The reader gets a pragmatic look at Scrum and learns when and how to best apply Scrum to achieve business benefits.”
–Yves Stalgies, PhD, Director IT, www.etracker.com

“Adoption of Scrum is most successful when everyone involved–even peripherally–with product development has a good understanding of the fundamentals. Essential Scrum provides an ideal overview of both the big picture and the details in an accessible style. It is sure to become a standard reference.”

The Scrum Book to Have!!!!
By T Anderson
This book's title Essentials Scrum: A Practical Guide to the Most Popular Agile Process, is a perfect description of what this book is. It covers every essential that you need to know about the scrum process, and the book is written to every role in the scrum process.

After a nice introductory chapter to Scrum, which includes the history of how Scrum came to be, the book breaks down into four parts. They include Core Concepts, Roles, Planning, and Sprinting. I have listed each part below along with the chapters found in each one.

Chapter 1. Introduction

Part I. Core Concepts
Chapter 2. Scrum Framework
Chapter 3. Agile Principles
Chapter 4. Sprints
Chapter 5. Requirements and User Stories
Chapter 6. Product Backlog
Chapter 7. Estimation and Velocity
Chapter 8. Technical Debt

Part II. Roles
Chapter 9. Product Owner
Chapter 10. ScrumMaster
Chapter 11. Development Team
Chapter 12. Scrum Team Structures
Chapter 13. Managers

Part III. Planning
Chapter 14. Scrum Planning Principles
Chapter 15. Multilevel Planning
Chapter 16. Portfolio Planning
Chapter 17. Envisioning (Product Planning)
Chapter 18. Release Planning (Longer-Term Planning)

Part IV. Sprinting
Chapter 19. Sprint Planning
Chapter 20. Sprint Execution
Chapter 21. Sprint Review
Chapter 22. Sprint Retrospective
Chapter 23. The Path Forward

The author's advice on when to use Scrum is a refreshing one. He is not one of the many Scrum zealots, mindlessly regurgitating Scrum mantras. He gives a nice overview of where Scrum works and where it doesn't in the introduction of the book. He also presents a realistic view on how difficult Scrum is. Scrum is not easy and the author makes that very clear.

One of the coolest parts of this book is the visual icon language used to create the diagrams. The diagrams in this book are some of the best I've ever seen. They really help to put the topic being covered with words into a visual context for better understanding.

The author's writing style is great, which makes the book an enjoyable read. Along with the visual icon language I would have to say this is the most descriptive book about Scrum I have read. Meaning the ideas were really drilled home in a very clear way.

The chapter on agile principles is great. The author really does a great job of comparing agile practice to plan driven practices and highlighting the difference. By the end of this chapter you have a great understand of the "why" agile practices are done and how Scrum implements them.

I was also glad to see the chapters on Multilevel Planning , Portfolio Planning, Envisioning, and Release Planning. When it comes to explaining how Scrum fits into the rest of the enterprise, many of the Scrum books I have read have a short blurb on Scrum of Scrums, and then move on back into topics only suited for small team development. These chapters take Scrum beyond small team development.

I like that the book has a really nice glossary for quick look ups of buzz words that may be new to you.

If you have to pick just one Scrum book, make this one your pick. If you are looking to learn Scrum, definitely start here. If you are a Scrum Master, this is the book to take your team through during training.

Excellent Resource for New and Maturing Agile Organizations
By Roger W. Brown
I have read the majority of books on Agile and Scrum in my career as a coach and trainer. It is really great to see a new, fresh book show up that presents the ins and outs of Scrum very clearly. Ken Rubin's Essential Scrum is an excellent introduction for beginners as well as a good reference for practitioners. Scrum sounds simple but there is are many challenges to implementing it and making the organizational changes necessary to do it successfully. Ken's book lays out the core values, principles, concepts and practices in terms and images that are easy to understand. There are some solid, practical descriptions of planning and the Scrum meetings that are a great guide for newbies and a great refresher for Scrum leaders who may have strayed from the practices.

And there is more. The book provides a very accessible treatment of three important topics that most other books miss. The importance of managing Technical Debt and the Lean concepts of Batch Size and limiting Work in Progress are essential in understanding how Scrum works and how to achieve a smooth flow for significantly higher value output. The shift in Management duties in an Agile organization is a critical aspect of cultural change. Ken also provides a short description of the topics that answer the frequently asked question "How do you scale Scrum?": Feature Teams, Scrum of Scrums and Release Trains.

The descriptions of the Product Owner and Development Team roles in this book go beyond the basic introduction, describing the work of the PO in preparatory and ongoing planning and describing important characteristics of a successful Dev Team. The ScrumMaster role is given fewer pages so you may want to supplement that topic with other sources when trying to convince your organization of the importance of that role. My experience shows that organizations often misunderstand and subsequently short-change the SM role, missing an important opportunity to improve team productivity and development flow from the start. The book is, however, a very valuable resource for working ScrumMasters with its excellent coverage of the Scrum meetings, tips for facilitation and treatment of Team dynamics.

I am now recommending this book to my ScrumMaster students and the teams that I coach. It is an excellent introduction and supporting reference book for organizations who are transitioning to Scrum or working their way up the Agile learning curve.

SCRUM for Newbies... and definitely NOT a Page-Turner !
By Frankie
Good book for SCRUM newbies, though I prefer SCRUM by Jeff Sutherland, its shorter and more to the point (glad I started with that one).

If you are already experienced, there are a few other books for deeper dives... I'll update this review with those recommendations (or message me for a list of what I've read on the subject, and which other books to definitely just stay away from--I don't think its nice to critique those here).

This book is truly about the Essentials. It's one of those reads where you keep reading because you think you are going to miss something if you skip the page or a chapter... but at the same time you keep checking to see how many more pages till you finish it. Not a page turner... at least not for me. I have kept the book as a reference guide, though I haven't referred to it in since I finished reading it about 5-6 months ago... but I'm hopefully and write this review because I continue to be asked about SCRUM.

Legend of a Suicide: Stories, by David Vann

“The reportorial relentlessness of [David] Vann’s imagination often makes his fiction seem less written than chiseled. A small, lovely book has been written out of his large and evident pain.”—New York Times Book Review

In Legend of a Suicide, his heartbreaking semi-autobiographical debut story-collection, David Vann relates the story of a young man trying to come to terms with the guilt and pain of his father’s suicide. The wild outback of the author’s native Alaska acts as the ideal backdrop for this collage of six stories—a novella and five shorts—and mirrors the author’s own psychological wilderness. From “an important new voice in American literature” (Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain) comes an unforgettable exploration of the tragic gaps between one boy and his father.

From Publishers Weekly
This well-crafted debut collection, five stories and a novella, from award-winning writer and memoirist Vann (A Mile Down) revolves obsessively around the suicide of an Alaskan father. Hopscotching through time, each tale examines the father's death from the perspective of his young son, Roy. The first story, Ichthyology, introduces the young protagonist and his troubled father, a tax-dodging dentist and fisherman who ends up shooting himself on the deck of his fishing boat. Rhoda finds the 12-year-old boy bonding with his new stepmother, a pretty young woman his father married before the tragedy. In A Legend of Good Men, Roy imagines a fantastically violent rampage in which he does away with his mother's suitors, la Odysseus and Telemachus. The novella, Sukkwan Island, is an increasingly suspenseful story of survival, in which a 13-year-old Roy and his father brave the elements for months in an isolated mountain cabin. Vann uses startling powers of observation to create strong characters, tense scenes and genuine surprises, leading to a ghastly conclusion that's sure to linger. (Dec.)

Review
“The reportorial relentlessness of Vann’s imagination often makes his fiction seem less written than chiseled. A small, lovely book has been written out of his large and evident pain. (Tom Bissell, New York Times Book Review)

“With Legend of a Suicide, Vann looks into the dark and isolated heart of the American soul. It is a devastating journey that is difficult to read but impossible to put down and equally impossible to forget.” (June Sawyers, San Francisco Chronicle)

“The stories in Legend of a Suicide approach a private mythos, revisiting, reinvestigating, and reinventing one family’s broken past. They also transport us to wild, uncharted places on the Alaskan coast and in the American soul. Throughout, David Vann is a generous, sure-handed guide in some very dangerous territory.” (Stewart O'Nan, author of Songs for the Missing)

“Headlong narrative pacing, a memorable train-wreck father who gives Richard Russo’s characters a run for their money, and a sure, sharp, inviting voice. So hard to put down that I am thinking of suing David Vann for several hours of lost sleep.” (Lionel Shriver, author of So Much For That and The Post-Birthday World)

“His legend is at once the truest memoir and the purest fiction. . . . Nothing quite like this book has been written before.” (Alexander Linklater, London Observer)

“The writing in these stories, informed by both the empirical and the lyrical, is heart-wrenching and gorgeous.” (Lorrie Moore)

“Brilliant . . . Vann’s prose follows the sinews of Cormac McCarthy and Hemingway, yet has its own nimble flex.” (The Times (London))

“Vengeful yet sorrowing and empathetic, plausible yet dreamlike, and completely absorbing.” (Christopher Tayler, The Guardian)

“As primal and unforgiving as the Alaskan wilds where it’s set.” (Bret Anthony Johnston, Men's Journal)

“David Vann’s extraordinary and inventive set of fictional variations on his father’s death will surely become an American classic.” (The Times Literary Supplement (London))

“A reckoning. . . . A message of profound sympathy and sadness, anger and regret, Legend of a Suicide is the melting away of one man’s past and the reshaping of tragedy into art. . . . [It] journeys unflinchingly into darkness.” (Greg Schutz, Fiction Writers Review)

“A powerful new voice has emerged in fiction.” (Sunday Times (London))

“A piece of relentless, heartbreaking brilliance that bears comparison with Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.” (The Weekend Australian)

“In his portrayal of a young son’s love for his lost father David Vann has created a stunning work of fiction: surprising, beautiful, and intensely moving.” (Nadeem Aslam, author of Maps for Lost Lovers and The Wasted Vigil)

“The most powerful, and pure, piece of writing I have read for a very long time. This book squeezes more life out of the first 100 pages than most books could manage in 1,000, which is pretty impressive, considering it’s a book about death.” (Ross Raisin, author of Out Backward)

‘This is my ‘One to watch’. . . . It’s stunning, beautifully written, with genuine surprises and a complexity which makes you retrace your steps, wonder what really happened and ponder over the whole scenario for days. I loved it. It’s Richard Yates, Annie Proulx territory, and highly recommended.” (Sarah Broadhurst, The Bookseller (UK))

“David Vann’s dark and strange book twists through natural forces and compressed emotions towards an extraordinary and dreamlike conclusion. One of the most gripping debuts I’ve ever read.” (Philip Hoare, author Leviathan, winner of the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize)

“For the imagery alone and for the sentences, the book would be a treasure.” (Colm Tibn, London Observer)

“A truly great writer.” (Irish Sunday Independent)

“Extraordinary. . . . Reminiscent of Tobias Wolff, Vann’s prose is as pure as a gulp of water from an Alaskan stream.” (Financial Times)

“The book is as dark, stormy, and beautiful as the ragged Aleutian coast.” (National Geographic Adventure)

A Groundbreaking Gasp-Out-Loud Work of Real Fiction
By Jill I. Shtulman
In the postscript to this astoundingly original book, David Vann quotes Grace Paley in saying that "every line in fiction has to be true. It has to be a distillation of experience more true to a person's life than any moment he or she has actually lived."

Through that definition, Legends of a Suicide is a true book. James Edward Vann - the author's father - did, indeed, kill himself when David was only 13. But the circumstances described here are that of mythology - a real-world event that is imagined, transformed, repackaged, reimagined. The book holds fast to the truth of the suicide and how it affected the author, even when it diverges significantly from the facts.

In ways, one can describe this book as a howl in the dark; the tentacles of the father's despairing act reach through the years and ensnare the author for decades. The book - opening and closing interweaving short stories and a novella - are mostly set in Ketchikan and the isolated Alaska woods.

What emerges is the portrait of a self-absorbed, clinically depressed, damaged man. At one point, the fictional-but-real father says, "I need the world animated and I need it to refer to me. I need to know that when a glacier shifts or a bear farts, it has something to do with me..."

Half-way through the book, there is a gasp-out-loud moment that will totally transform the relationship between the father, the son, and indeed, the reader. Everything is suddenly reconfigured and as the book takes form again, the reader begins to realize exactly how the suicide has affected the author. I will not reveal this spoiler, but it is one of the most astonishing feats I've seen in reimagined fiction. And although the reader understands that he or she is truly in a psychological wilderness, it does not take away from the truth of the experience.

There are hints of Tobias Wolff and even Hemingway in the author's control of the style, but make no mistake: this is a very authentic new voice. At the end of the day, it's about a vulnerable son who does not have the mental apparatus to deal with an emotionally ill father who desperately seeks to stay on top of his life while falling through the crevices. It will transport you to unchartered territories. The friend who recommended this book told me, "THIS is why we read." I wholeheartedly agree.

Harsh environment leads to tragedy (3.75*s)
By J. Grattan
This book of five short stories and one novella - 75% of the book - is an effort by the author to shed some light on suicide generally, but more specifically on that of his father some thirty years prior. Because of the autobiographical intent of the book, it is somewhat unfortunate that the author included strange, inconsistent twists in some of the stories that confuse and dilute the effort. However, little doubt is left concerning the psychic pain surrounding suicide - its haunting after effects, not to mention the mental deterioration leading to it.

The main story is set in a totally isolated fiord, surrounded by steep mountains, in southeastern Alaska where Jim, a lapsed dentist and twice divorced, has prevailed upon his thirteen-year-old son, Roy, now living in California with his mother, to live for a year in an A-frame cabin. It quickly becomes evident that they are almost totally unprepared for such a life; they lack both knowledge of primitive survival techniques and essential tools and supplies. Within days of being flown in on an amphibian plane, a bear breaks in and devastates their cabin, ruining most of their food supply. That is only a small sample of what the harsh, rocky, wet, and cold landscape suggests is to come.

Beyond the upsetting environmental surprises, little did Roy understand the psychological depths to which his father's life had sunk. His life had been spiraling downward for some time, with two failed marriages, numerous affairs, a failed commercial fishing venture, and a dentistry career left behind. Roy was not ready for the nighttime crying and talking of his father, which was covered with false cheerfulness in the mornings. The entire scenario was unsustainable, bursting with tension, and it all finally exploded with a devastating death. It quite literally took months for a rescue, but not before tremendous physical hardship and agonizing self-admonishments and rationalizations were endured.

The author does play with facts and no doubt employs much exaggeration, yet most of that is more than justified in trying to explain suicide. Reconstruction of thought processes may be about as close one can get to understanding suicide. Nonetheless, the reader is left wondering how Jim arrived at his mental situation beyond his more obvious setbacks. Mental states and actions do have a large social component.

The saga of life at the cabin is a little repetitious, but is fairly gripping; Roy and his father seemed to be on the verge of disaster on a daily basis. The other, shorter stories are not without interest, despite their somewhat dissonant aspects. Beyond suicide, this book would make any rational person have second thoughts about embarking on a life in the wilds of Alaska on no more than a whim.

A Death in the Family
By An admirer of Saul
Basically 6 short stories focusing on Roy and his relationship with his father, and the huge shadow his suicide casts on him. The main story, 'Sukkwan Island' has them together on an ill thought out adventure break in an isolated cabin on an Alaskan island and explores how Jim would react and respond to his sons suicide.
This is a poignant book on an extremely difficult subject, and Vann -over the span of the novel- exorcises the demons that must haunt the survivors of a suicide in the family;something the aurthor has experienced personally.
'Legend of a suicide' is a well written, absorbing book but the sudden change of emphasis and plot in the 'Sukkwan' chapter does throw you off the scent you picked up in the opening 2 chapters and resume with in the closing 3 chapters, so it is worth begining this book in the knowledge that it is basically 6 stories about suicide and its aftermath.
A brave book that acts as a kind of antidote to contemplation and enacting of suicide that permeate so many literary works-Hemingway, Mishima and Styron's spring instantly to mind.Well
'Legend of a suicide' is well worth a read.

About the Author

Cheech & Chong defined a generation with their classic, counter-culture comedy albums and cult films, such as the wildly popular Earache My Eye and Up in Smoke. After their split, the pair went on to have successful solo careers in both TV and film, with Cheech taking on roles like Joe on Nash Bridges and Belini in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Chong portraying Leo in That 70’s Show. After 25 years apart they reunited in 2008 for a comeback comedy tour, new video game, and feature film. They live in Los Angeles, California.

Loved it! ...I think.
By Buddy Boyd
I would write a HUGE positive review of this amazing, hilarious and oh-so-true compendium of cannabis but I can't seem to remember what was in this book...or was it a CD? a BluRay?

Dave?

No, man. Dave ain't here.

Errors in this book
By Thomas Seiler
I recently attended a Cheech and Chong concert and it was one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time. They haven't lost a thing. I bought this book because I am a long time pot smoker and one of the authors of California's Prop 215. I loved the book but there are two glaring errors in the book I am going to point out in hopes that either Cheech or Chong reads this review and corrects the errors for the second printing.

1 - Page 85 - Stoner Etiquette - Entry number 4 - When you light a bowl, light the corner to leave fresh weed on the other side. NEVER do that. It is dumb. What happens if you do that is the hit will contain only a small percentage of smoke and a large percentage of fresh air, which will dilute the hit severely. When lighting a bowl you should always light the entire surface of the bowl for the most powerful hit possible. I would only light a small area if I was a total lightweight (and I am as far from a lightweight as is humanly possible).

2 - Page 99 - Gravity Bong. A bong is a water pipe that filters smoke by passing the smoke through water. The Gravity Bong does use water, but not for filtering. It uses water pressure to fill the bottle with smoke and to fill your lungs with smoke, but none of the smoke is filtered therefore it is not a bong.

Sorry to be so picky C&C but I gotta point these out. I still love ya!
