Different version don't trust description!!

It was the SI version, when I called and asked if it was the same as the regular version they told me it was then when I received it the problems didn't match up and there are no solutions for it. It is not the same book as the hard copy even though that's what it's under. Do not order the paper back unless you are 100% sure that you're using the different version. Now I might be out 90 bucks and still have to buy the book for my class somewhere else.

Good Textbook

I bought this book about 4 months ago for my Statics class at university. The book is well organized and the concepts as well as the examples are easy to follow. I have found it to be a very good reference especially if one is learning some of the concepts mentioned in the book from scratch. There is a sufficient number of examples and problems for one to digest the material.

On the downside, the book does not have the feel of a general purpose reference book and should be regarded as a textbook that is to be followed in order to learn the material inside.

About the Author
Martin van Creveld is Emeritus Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and one of the world's best known experts on military history and strategy. He is the author of over twenty books, covering all aspects of these subjects, which have now been translated into twenty languages including Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serb and Spanish. Professor van Creveld has consulted for the defense establishments of various countries and taught or lectured at many institutes of higher learning, both military and civilian. He has also written hundreds of articles and conducted interviews for newspapers, television and radio all over the world.

Wargaming as no one else would recognize it

Martin van Creveld never really defines “wargames”, indeed in the concluding chapter he decides that such a definition is impossible. But that didn’t stop him from writing this book, and giving himself latitude to cover an incredibly wide scope. The problem is that this scope is so wide as to be almost meaningless, and certainly wider than anybody in the wargaming hobby or profession would recognize.

He has the classics, Chess and it’s variants, some mention of the German General Staff and the WWII gaming of the Japanese, he is aware of commercial board wargaming (though he hardly devotes more than a few paragraphs) and he lightly touches on HG Wells and miniatures. I’ll even grudgingly allow his comments on computers and video games to fall under a broad understanding of wargaming.

But Gladiators? Duels? Trial by Combat? Does that sound like wargaming to you? Paint Ball, Laser Tag, Reenactments… all get many pages. He includes a long foray into Professional Wrestling, and dives in even deeper with an exploration of Mud Wrestling. And be warned, he spends more time on Mud wrestling than he does on Charles Roberts and James Dunnigan. How is that possible? Well, fully 40% of the book is about Gladiators, for whom he clearly has an obsession. And he’s quite knowledgeable about Gladiators, maybe he should write a book on that topic, but they are overrepresented here to a ridiculous degree, even assuming they should be in a book about wargaming at all.

Throw in another chapter about the different ways Men and Women participate in or react to all of the above, which is charitably an opinion piece on social norms, not a history of wargaming, no matter how broadly construed, and you have a half baked, apparently unedited, mishmash of garbage on practically every topic except what a modern wargamer would consider to be his hobby.

The best part was the illustrations. (There are none)

Gladiators, chess and paintball

Why do men (mostly) play at war? For religious reasons, to settle disputes, to train or plan for real war, and for entertainment. From tribal mock battles and Roman gladiators, to tournaments, single combat, and duels, to board games and computer-based simulations, van Creveld takes the reader through an exhausting--excuse me, I should say exhaustive--history of wargames in their many forms and roles in their respective societies.

I learned that I would like very much not to travel back to ancient Rome, nor would I like to prove my case with a fight to the death. I also learned that video games, laser tag and paintball have converged with reality to the extent that playing at war and preparing for the real thing are sometimes indistinguishable.

van Creveld draws helpful lines between war, wargames and other games. It's not always obvious, but history provides many examples to illustrate the differences. The framing of games and sports as wargames also helps to explain why we may have the games, and perhaps part of their appeal.

In his whirlwind tour of the subject--spanning thousands of years in a little over 300 pages--the author raises questions that warrant a follow-up. In particular, to what extent have wargames and simulations influenced strategy and the outcomes of real wars since Prussia instituted gaming as a planning methodology in the late 19th century? Applying the lessons to the present, to what extent does the historical record support the expectation that strategists employing simulations gain an advantage from their use?

I learned of Martin van Creveld from an old friend who recommended his earlier book, The Transformation of War: The Most Radical Reinterpretation of Armed Conflict Since Clausewitz, which I also recommend. Again with his new book, van Creveld provides history, thoughtful analysis, and stimulating arguments. You don't have to agree with him, but wrestling with what he writes is a worthy exercise.

Serviceable With Flaws

Yikes! The hardcover is selling for over a hundred on Amazon. Save some of your money. Kindle might be the best bargain if you're really interested in the subject or the author. He is a prolific one, whose Supplying War & The Transformation of War are considered classics by some. This is an adequate introductory history on war games, whatever they may be. The author takes a stab at it, but throws his net a bit far, I think. Included in the author's survey are war games pertaining to religious rites, judicial combat, and trial by combat. He also focuses on war games as learning exercises/ exercises in preparedness for actual war, and as entertainment. The former categories do not seem to be "games" at all, while the latter do. This problem categorizing appears to be the result of the contaminative nature of what is construed to be "entertainment". Practically anything watchable for enjoyment, whether that be its direct purpose or not. If people gather and enjoy a good duel, this activity warrants the appellation of "war game." I'm inclined to view war games as lacking actual war's seriousness, though remaining similar to war for purposes of knowledge or entertainment, and therefore judicial combat & religious rites should be excluded as non-applicable . A duel is really neither a "war", nor a "game". The author attaches religious rites to gladiatorial games, thus making his connection. These seem very separate to me. Religious rites may placate the gods through the entertaining arena combat, perhaps, as the author states, yet the vehicle is not its passenger and shouldn't be confused as such. Of course, a book does need fleshing out, and nothing fleshes out a book better than stepping away from a relevant topic by including one maybe less so, yet capable of filling pages. Speaking of which, the penultimate chapter on women and war games is nothing less than creepy. The author's personal misogynistic views are happily unpacked, though this helps educate as to the nature of war games hardly at all. To summarize: Women hardly play; they'd likely get beat anyway; they're best left to flashing male players while spectating, or adding chess skills to a career in prostitution, or having a discreet dinner with the author. There is much that is fine with this book, but chapter 7 isn't a part of it. His survey of military games, however, appears comprehensive, if somewhat rudimentary. His notion that war games are separated from actual war by removal of "the continuation of politics" is probably superficially correct, but factually inaccurate. I suspect the author is aware of this. Gladiators and their contests are exhaustingly, if not exhaustively, dealt with at the beginning. Tournaments are wandered through. The similarities enumerated between sport and war games are rather interesting, as well. The author explores the change of strategic planning after the emergence of nuclear weapons and its effects on war gaming with adequate deftness. The rise of the computer is given its proper space, with its Battlezone & Metal Gear. The use of simulation with the rise of complex technology is expounded upon. Still, I can't help walking away from this work thinking it could have been better: more detailed, more interesting, & Better written. The center of the book contains most of whatever meat you'll find. The bread holding it may leave you with a "gamey" taste in your mouth. Pun intended.

About the Author

Karen Duffy is a Distinguished Service Professor—emerita, at the State University of New York College at Geneseo. She received her Ph.D. in social and personality psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. Duffy served as a family mediator for the New York Unified Court System. She has also served on the executive committee and as the chief instructor for the training insti-tute for the New York State Employee Assistance Program (EAP), as well as on the board of di-rectors for a shelter for domestic violence and on an educational committee for a family planning agency. She has consulted to a variety of work settings on stress management, EAPs, and other work issues. She is a member of the American Psychological Society. Dr. Duffy has written sev-eral other books, including Community Mediation: A Handbook for Practitioners and Research-ers and Community Psychology. She also edits several hard-copy and web-based annual editions for another publisher, on topics including psychology of personality, social psychology, intro-ductory psychology, and adjustment. She has held two Fulbright Fellowships to St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, Russia. While in Russia, she worked with AIDS International, several children’s shelters, and other community agencies. More recently, she completed a hu-manitarian aid trip to Mongolia.

Steven J. Kirsh is a Professor of Psychology at The State University of New York at Geneseo. Dr. Kirsh’s primary areas of research focus on the influence of violent media on emo-tion recognition and social information processing. He has published Children, Adolescents, and Media Violence: A Critical Look at the Research (2006) and Media and Youth: A Developmental Perspective (2010) as well as numerous scientific articles and book chapters.

As was the case with many South African writers, Gordimer's fiction benefited, ironically enough, from the stark moral contrasts created by apartheid. The nine stories in this collection show Gordimer trying to gain a fictional perspective on the new era, and there are some missteps among them as she employs heavy-handed symbolism and less-than-revelatory social observations ("They had met at a party, the customary first stage in the white middle-class ritual of mating choices"). The title story describes an earthquake that "tipped a continental shelf" and drew back the ocean over a vast expanse, so that the detritus of the past, littered over the ocean floor, has been revealed. In response, people rush down into the former ocean bed and try to pry up treasure, unaware that the ocean, in a great wave, is coming back. In another allegorical story, "Look-Alikes," homeless, unemployed laborers invade a college campus, staking out a campsite in the sports fields, and are joined, sneakily at first, then openly, by the college's sympathetic faculty. "Karma" is a series of emblematic sketches set in various periods between WWII and the present day, which include the stories of Norma, an antiapartheid activist who got caught in a corruption scandal, and Denise, a white baby adopted by a black family in apartheid days, absurdly forbidden by law from marrying her white lover. These vividly imagined characters are among the best in the book, but the story is burdened with an awkward reincarnation conceit that is meant to hold the disparate episodes together. Overall, the stories feel tentative, as though they were straight out of Gordimer's sketch book, and needed a layer of finish.

Since Gordimer won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991, her great novels, such as The House Gun (1998) and The Pickup (2001), have continued to open up the contemporary scene--in her native South Africa and elsewhere--with passionate insight and astonishing storytelling. But many of the short stories in this collection, her first in 12 years, are more situations than fully developed fiction. "Generation Gap" is a hilarious scenario of middle-aged kids in a flap when their elderly father leaves their mother for a young woman. In "Diamond Mine," a teen has her first sexual experience with a soldier in the backseat of the car while her parents in front drone on about the scenery. The longest story, "Mission Statement," about a dedicated woman sent to Africa by an international aid agency, is worth the book, both a brilliant lampoon of the bureaucratic empowerment babble ("projects of policy, infrastructure, communications, trade, treaties . . .") and a haunting drama of modern lovers who can't get free of a past "where violence lies shallowly buried." In a class by herself

Gordimer's use of language is beyond what the ordinary story teller employs. Her words are nuanced, metaphorical, and indirect in ways that let you mentally fill in the gaps and is very satisfying to one as the reader. I don't know of anyone who writes quite like her. Her stories are not plot driven and seem to evoke something profound about the characters' humanity that is difficult to describe. There are ordinary situations in some of her stories that are so vividly expressed, that they never leave your mind. Her writing is in a class of its own.

Unfinished business

An air of the surreal weaves through some of the stories in this intriguing collection of short fiction. As an astute and engaged observer of social realities at home and globally, South African Nadine Gordimer brilliantly captures ordinary people's lives as they attempt to make sense of it, more or less successfully. And then, there is usually an unexpected twist towards the end of each story - some giving a future perspective in a different voice, inviting the reader to ponder varied possibilities.

Nadine Gordimer, multiple award winner, including of the Nobel Prize in 1991, is well known and admired for her short fiction. Here, she brings together a novella, a number of portraits of normal people with very brief fragments or musings based around a specific news event, such as a tsunami in the title story, "Loot". "The Generation Gap" is a light hearted, ironic look at the squabbles of grown-up children about their widowed father who falls in love with a violinist of their own age. Something surreal happens with a group of professors in "Look Alike", another tongue in cheek story, yet with an allegoric message. The novella "The Mission Statement" is the most traditional of the stories in the collection. The central figure is a middle-aged English foreign aid worker experiencing her first African assignment. Her story is a surprising departure from the rest of the collection, both in tone and substance: very down to earth and, despite the intended surprise ending, completely realistic.

"Karma", the final segment is in itself a collection of vignettes, held together by a linking voice - that of a forever returning spirit-child. Anybody who has read the hauntingly beautiful The Famished Road by Booker Prize winner, Ben Okri, will remember the importance of the spirit-child in African cultures. Gordimer introduces such a spirit, develops it into one that is capable of memory and learning, who returns again and again, initially as an afterthought sprinkled into some of the short pieces. Yet in "Karma", it takes an important reflective role, linking the individual vignettes together. She expands the concept of "karma", building around it some of the most evocative pieces in the whole collection: love, race, relationships, society's explicit or implicit restrictions. As the title suggests, Hindu beliefs are also reflected upon by the returning spirit. The question remains at the end whether the need to return to the world to overcome the faults or weaknesses of the previous life does not in itself lead to "an unfinished business".

Gordimer's language is spare and efficient, her people descriptions vivid and precise. The detached tone and approach she demonstrates to her subjects does, however, not deny them emotional depth. Oblique references to brutality and conflict during the Apartheid period in South Africa are interwoven with the lives of her characters, in some cases contrasted with the post-Apartheid potential for a new beginning or ending. Nevertheless the stories reach beyond their locale in addressing common human aspirations and preoccupations. All of them leave room for the reader to ponder and expand on ideas and questions raised.
