Spain, in particular, has been transformed from an immigrant-exporting country to one receiving hundreds of thousands of new immigrants. Today, almost 13 percent of the country’s population is foreign-born. Spanish Legacies, written by internationally known experts on immigration, explores how the children of immigrants—the second generation—are coping with the challenges of adaptation to Spanish society, comparing their experiences with those of their peers in the United States.

Using a rich data set based on both survey and ethnographic material, Spanish Legacies describes the experiences of growing up by the large population of second-generation youths in Spain and the principal outcomes of the process—from national self-identification and experiences of discrimination to educational attainment and labor-market entry. The study is based on a sample of almost 7,000 second-generation students who were interviewed in Madrid and Barcelona in 2008 and then followed and re-interviewed four years later. A survey of immigrant parents, a replacement sample for lost respondents in the second survey, and a survey of native-parentage students complement this rich data set. Outcomes of the adaptation process in Spain are systematically presented in five chapters, introduced by real-life histories of selected respondents drawn by the study’s ethnographic module. Systematic comparisons with results from the United States show a number of surprising similarities in the adaptation of children of immigrants in both countries, as well as differences marked by contrasting experiences of discrimination, self-identities, and ambition.

About the Author
Alejandro Portes is a best-selling UC Press author, Howard Harrison and Gabrielle S. Beck Professor of Sociology (emeritus) at Princeton University, and Research Professor at the University of Miami. He is a former president of the American Sociological Association and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Rosa Aparicio is Senior Researcher at the Ortega y Gasset University Institute of Madrid and the current chair of the Spanish National Board for Immigrant Integration. William Haller is Associate Professor of Sociology at Clemson University; he has published widely on immigration and second-generation adaptation in the United States.

ambition, without greed, pays off

I got my copy of BE MY GUEST at an old book sale at the public library. It's a wonderful book, and I'm glad to hear that even in the late 1990s it was still being distributed at Hilton hotels. This book chronicles the business endeavors of Conrad N. Hilton from his aspirations to own his own bank in the pre-WWI years through his first hotels in Texas and New Mexico in the early '20s to his crowning glory--the purchase of the opulent Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC around 1950. What makes this book interesting and useful is the quality of the man, not the strength of his business empire. "Connie" Hilton is a man of honor and principle, but he has much ambition, too. His fortunes have been made through hard work, calculated risks, and his "people skills." Comparing Conrad "Connie" Hilton to someone like Donald "The Donald" Trump shows how our culture has become more cheap and frivilous in the two generations that separate these hotel/real estate giants. For another book with similar factual content but less wit, humor, and commentary on human nature, see Thomas Ewing Dabney's book, THE MAN WHO BOUGHT THE WALDORF (New York: Duell, Sloan, and Pearce;1950.)

Should be standard reading for entrepreneurial success; a timeless classic

I picked up Be My Guest by Conrad Hilton when I stayed at the Milwaukee Hilton several years ago. Guests of Hilton hotels in addition to finding the standard free soap and shampoo also receive a complimentary copy of Hilton's memoir, originally written in 1957. I started reading Be My Guest while aboard S. A. Agulhas II en route from Cape Town, South Africa to Tristan da Cunha. I finished the book on board and while I wanted to leave it in the ship's library when I had finished it, the lack of Internet on board, both on my way to Tristan as well as coming back, precluded me from posting this review from the ship. Thus I have waited until my return to Cape Town to post this.

Be My Guest was an engaging story that I enjoyed reading each night. It was a can't-put-down book, wherein Hilton documented his family story, often with humorous anecdotes, from the courtship of his parents and his boyhood growing up in New Mexico to his founding of one of the greatest hotel chains worldwide.

Each of Hilton's parents instilled in him a guiding principle that he has followed all of his life. From his mother, Mary Laufersweiler Hilton, he learned the power of prayer and from his father Gus he learned the value of work. In addition to these principles Hilton added his own: that one must never be afraid to dream. And to dream big . And big is exactly how Conrad Hilton dreamt.

Hilton got his first taste of the hotel industry when a currency panic in October 1907 left his father nearly broke. His family soon realized that they had been literally sitting on a moneymaker:

"We had the biggest, ramblingest adobe house in New Mexico directly facing a railroad station on a main line. And we had my mother's cooking. This added up to only one thing--a Hilton Hotel."

Be My Guest had plenty of humorous moments and I can imagine Hilton himself laughing out loud as he recalled some moments from his childhood. I'll bet he had a good time writing (or dictating) his story. Having such a devoutly Catholic mother kept a young Connie always on his toes:

"Almost as much as going to church or playing hooky, I liked going down the road to talk with Charles Hislie, the carpenter, or Carl Jenks, the village blacksmith and dentist. Mr. Jenks shoed horses or pulled teeth, whichever service was required at the moment. My brother Carl, after an extraction, claimed that he used the same instruments for both operations, but I have no first-hand knowledge of that.
"As I seldom had a toothache I loved to hang around Mr. Jenks' emporium and smell the pungent hot smell and listen to the hammer ringing on the anvil. I also liked to hear Mr. Jenks cuss. He was very talented in that direction and to this day I believe he had as extensive a vocabulary as any man I ever met.
"This hero worship was rudely interrupted when an unsuitable word escaped my lips at dinner table. Mother was shocked. Gus paused in carving the roast only long enough to glare at me and say, 'You stay away from the smithy.' From that time I did, except on dental business when I was accompanied by my lady mother."

Mrs. Hilton also features in an amusing story after her son had made his fortune in the hotel business. She could not accustom herself to having others do for her what she had proudly always done herself:

"My mother, I might add, never did modernize her views on tipping. When she lived for some years at the El Paso Hilton, this was a source of some amusement and much conniving on the part of her children. I, myself, would take her twenty or thirty quarters with specific instructions that she was to give one or two to any bellboy, any waiter, anyone, indeed, who gave her special service, depending on the extra amount of trouble it gave him.

"'I'll try, Connie,' she'd say.
"And I would find out from my sister Helen that, as soon as my back was turned, she'd trot down to the cashier and have the quarters converted into dimes, with which she reluctantly rewarded any service she absolutely could not do herself. Ten cents remained all her life the most she could bring herself to tip."

Be My Guest traces Hilton's shift from buying banks to buying hotels. At first he took over older hotels and transformed them according to his vision. The Hilton empire of new hotels was not his immediate intention. Only after his frustration in having to renovate yet another older building did he consider starting to build his next hotel from the ground up.

It was however not a new hotel but the palatial Queen of all hotels, the Waldorf Astoria, that was his prime target for many years. Its prestige as the height of luxurious hotel accommodation and reputation for unparallelled service made it the diamond in the eye of the Big Apple. He dreamt of owning it one day, and this big dream of his would one day become true. Hilton wrote of his many offers and counteroffers, and offered his insights into the skills of negotiation and the honour in keeping your word with a handshake.

The Waldorf Astoria may be the Queen of his "dowager" hotels, yet he still had to revitalize it to meet Hilton standards. However even when confronted with a rather unfortunate reality of hotel ownership, Hilton can still elicit a smile:

"A wire from Carl at the Waldorf pinpointed this vague feeling. 'Fellow in 202 bumped himself off last night. After looking at his room I don't blame him. We have got to fix up those rooms.'
"I somehow doubted that the d�cor in 202 had driven the poor fellow to suicide. Unfortunately tired people, discouraged people have sought the impersonal solitude of a hotel for their unhappy business since time immemorial."

One of the pleasures of reading Be My Guest were its stories away from the wheeling and dealing and cornerstone laying. I was absorbed not only in the stories of Hilton's boyhood but also in the tales about his wives and children. Hilton's second marriage was to Zsa Zsa Gabor which in retrospect he could see "was doomed before it started". He recounted with heaving exasperation the countless times he tried to curb her spending habits:

"Glamour, I found, is expensive, and Zsa Zsa was glamour raised to the last degree. She also knew more days on which gifts could be given than appear on any holiday calendar. And then, of course, you could always give gifts because it was no special day at all and thereby transform it."

and:

"I have tried to instill sound business principles into my beautiful Circe, but I might as well have practiced on a statue in the park."

Be My Guest , being that it was published in 1957 at the end of the communist red scare of McCarthyism, ends its final chapters with Hilton vowing to fight communism. The anti-communist tone seems like a time warp of a read for today's reader, yet at the time the red menace was seen as a legitimate threat and proud Americans showed their patriotism by publicly fighting against it. To Hilton, his hotels bridged cultures by bringing the peoples of the world together as a united front against communism.

Hilton ends his book by listing his ten ingredients for successful living. His words of wisdom may help others realize their dreams. Herewith are the Hilton top ten:

Don't worry about your problems.
Don't cling to the past.

Old 'classic' book, a very nice read..

Hi guys,
I read this book because Dan Kennedy mentioned it in one of his marketing books..

It is a rags to riches story about Conrad Hilton, the guy who started Hilton hotels as we know it.
(This is before the days of Paris Hilton, Conrad was not born into money & fame!)

I was expecting to learn about entrepreneurial skills.. which I did a little, but I got more out of this book than I was expecting.. I got a cultural history lesson and an ethics lesson !

It was written in 1957 and covered Conrad's life in older times still, he talks about his parents, before the 1st world war.. What was lovely, was I got an insight into the old days, how people lived.. before technology as we know it today.. and before some cities were even built..

I never realised that hotels in the past didn't have room service, or getting a pickup from the station by taxi, 100 years ago, was unheard of.. stuff we take for granted now, but at one point didn't exist..

I feel I gained a renewed sense of ethics that may well help me in my own ventures in the future.. I'm not a Christian, and Connie does go on about the Christian 'God' alot.. occasionally too much, but never enough to really bother me, I understood where he was coming from, and was interesting to see how his faith helped him..

The first chapter, I found hard and boring to read, fortunately shortly after, I started getting into this book, and am really glad I read it.

There are as you can expect, a number of little pears of wisdom scattered throughout this book, and Im sure each reader will find their own nuggets.
It's not a big book.. 280+ pages, and a very nice little read.. Worth it in my opinion.

Content is Good, but Ebook Formatting is Terrible

The overall structure and content of this book is good. That being said, the ebook formatting make it almost unusable. Some pages have very small text, on others chunks of text are all over the page or running off the page. I've tried this on a couple of different devices and it appears to be the ebook, not the reader. Sadly, as there are no refunds for ebook downloads, I'm just stuck with a $50+ ebook with broken formatting. It's great to see that Amazon has halted the sale of the ebook version and I hope they provide an updated version to those of us who purchased the sub-standard product. Until then, grab the paper version.

A good overview but falls short

As an overview of Information Technology law across a wide variety of jurisdiction, this book does succeed in providing a good overview and an introduction to some basic concepts. However the written expression throughout is poor and the level of detail too often falls short. Coupled with a very small font in the print edition, and it makes for an unpleasant reading experience, and poor value for one seeking a research aid.

Really, Really Good Book

Tommy Angelo in Elements of Poker, probably offered the single best piece of advice every written to becoming a good player, always play your “A” game. He never really defined what an “A” looks like, other than it was significantly better than your “D” game.

The Course defines the “A” game for live low stakes no-limit Holdem. If you stick to Ed’s guidelines, you will become a winning player.

I first encountered Ed over 12 years ago on the 2-plus-2 forums for his famous post, “Why You Are Not Crushing Small Stakes Holdem.” Ed had taken the time to write a long post about the skills necessary to beat the game and then took the time to answers questions. Since it was free, his only reward was helping other players get better.

Ed went on to become the most prolific authors on small stakes Holdem. While I am sure he likes the money and fame, I think his principle motivations remain the same. A sincere desire to help people become better players.

In The Course, Ed distills all the poker knowledge from his previous books and articles into a skill-by-skill framework to becoming proficient at 1-3, 2-5, and beyond. On any of one of these skills, there is more to learn but he provides the essential knowledge.

Example, in Pokers 1%, he goes through the math of why calling and then folding too many hands is everyone’s biggest leak. In The Course, he tells you this concept, but does not spend too long on the why. To understand the why plan on reading his other books, they are all excellent and worth your while.

Ed boils his advice down to advice that is very simply to remember and follow. Example, Don’t Pay People Off when they bet big is his second skill for a 1-3 level game. Just following that simple advice will enable many players to go from loser to break even. Vegas players have feasted for years on tourists never being able to lay down Ace-King when an Ace flops.

To those thinking that’s “obvious”, set mining would not be profitable if most players, even supposed “good” ones would not pay you off.

Later, at the 2-5 level, he explains there are times you need to violate this rule, as always folding to big bets at higher levels will become as big a leak as never folding. Next time I pay someone off, and it will happen; now I have a framework to decide if it was the right decision.

Many people, who have read all of Ed’s books and articles, may wonder if this is just a repetition of previous work. For me, The Course reinforce some of the things I knew, and explained things in a way that finally got through my brain. The chapter on getting 3 streets of value from good hands was well worth the price of admission.

This is one poker book where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. When you go through the entire journey with Ed, from answering the question where does the money come to taking on the pros, you emerge as a better player. I have already read the book several times, something I normally never do. It is that good.

For a serious player, The Course will become the one book you always reread on the flight to Vegas.

NOT some magic bullet vague tip like "don't pay off

Ed Miller's been writing poker strategy books for a while now, and he's clearly very successful at marketing, promoting, and publishing new work constantly.

But here's the problem: new poker theory isn't coming out at the same pace poker strategy materials are being produced. This goes quadruple for the lower stakes games ($100NL and below online, or $2/5 live), where basic theory and a solid fundamental understanding of the game is the key to winning, NOT some magic bullet vague tip like "don't pay off." In fact, I would actually argue that much of the information in this book is even technically inaccurate, which for a beginner might as well read as "burn money." This is coming from a professional mid-stakes no-limit player and former poker video producer.

Here's an example from the book, also used in Ed Miller's hand-of-the-week e-mailing list:

"It's a $2-$5 game in Las Vegas. Your opponent is a typical regular player at the stakes. You're playing $1,000 stacks.

A player opens for $20 from three off the button. You call in the cutoff with K♦Q♦. The blinds fold. There’s $47 in the pot. The flop comes T♦9♠6♠. Your opponent bets $30. What should you do?

Raise. This is a dynamic flop that your opponent, an out-of-position pre-flop raiser, should be checking a lot. But if this player is like most at 2-5, there’s a good chance he’s unaware of these subtleties, or he is aware, but he makes so much money firing barrels he’s going to fire away until given a reason not to."

So if you're an experienced player, you'll realize that on the flop you have two over, a gutshot, and a backdoor flush draw, which is a lot of equity to see a turn in position with. In fact, raising is significantly worse than calling, because you risk getting re-raised on the flop, deep, in position, with a hand that isn't good enough to happily fold like A6.

In fact, not seeing turns in position here is arguably one of the hallmarks of a weaker player, because it's not abusing the single biggest strength you have as a player, 200BB deep: position. Weaker players want to end the hand and get the immediate feedback of winning a pot; weaker players care about dragging pots while strong players care about winning bets. I think a 2+2 book said that, so it's funny to see a hand where that concept is clearly applied poorly.

For what it's worth, no strong players recommend Ed Miller's books, or any 2+2 book except Matthew Janda's, which is fantastic. But if you think 2+2 is offering new or cutting edge information, information you can't read off of forums and digests across the internet (to be fair, mostly on 2+2), then you've been fooled by the advertising.

This is the ninth book written by Ed Miller, concerning Texas Hold’Em poker cash games. Some of the earlier books were written in concert with other authors, but all the recent ones were written solely by Miller, and concern the play of the no limit, cash version of the game. Ed is a very bright, well-educated fellow, very experienced in $1-2, $2-5 and $5-10 no limit games as played in Las Vegas, and across the country. He is a highly respected player, author and teacher.
The Course is designed for players at these levels, to enable them to win the games they currently play, and perhaps move up a level successfully. New concepts are presented in an interesting and coherent manner, and many are new ideas that even very experienced players may not have considered before. Ed has a unique ability to see what others don’t know or understand, and to lead them to the right questions to ask, and to the right answers. That ability shows up in this book.
While many of the concepts are not simple, Ed presents them in an understandable way that makes them easy to absorb and retain, and put into your game. There is virtually no “math” to speak of, though the needed math concepts are woven into the material seamlessly. “Math-phobics” need not fear!
An over-riding theme throughout the book is the idea that almost all low-level Hold’em players at these games play far too many hands, a fact which we need to understood and use advantageously. This central idea shows up one way or another in every one of the “skills” throughout the book.
The Course is arranged into three basic sections; one each for $1-2, $2-5, and $5-10 NLHE. Within each section there are several chapters, each presenting “skills” the player will need for success at that level. For example, in the $1-2 section, three “skills” are presented: preflop play, avoiding paying off opponents, and understanding the real value of our own hand, relative to likely hands the opponent might be playing. Each of the skills feeds into the next, for use as a building block.
The focus of the sections differs, too. The first section, on $1-2, has the reader concerned primarily with his own cards, the problems he may have, and how best to play.
The second section, for $2-5 NL contains four skills and focusses much more on the other players in the game, what cards they may be playing, what their strategies might be, and how to use that information productively. Betting skills, tells, reading the opponent and evaluating the texture of the board cards are key ideas in this section, along with understanding one’s own emotions effectively.
The third section is devoted to an introduction to $5-10 NLHE, and to the skills required for success at that level. The key factor here is coping with aggression, taking on “professional players,” and playing with deep stacks for much larger sums than in the earlier two sections.
Each of the sections ends with a “Hand Quiz” in which hands are presented as unknowns, with discussion, to emphasize points made in that section.
The book is not a difficult read. Quite the contrary, in fact. I found it very interesting and enjoyable, and was able to gather a number of useful ideas for my own game. I believe even knowledgeable, experienced players will be pleasantly surprised with the amount of useful new information they find in the book.
My prediction is The Course will be very popular and will soon be known as one of the very best books on No-Limit Cash games. It was a pleasure to be able to review the book!
