Valuable information

This book provides a lot of useful information for individual investors as well as people who are planning to start their own hedge fund.
The book is well-organized and laid out so that you can learn about the industry as you read through the chapters.
Not very technical or academic - instead it is full of practical advice and suggestions that aim to help the reader get from point A to point B with as little effort (and if you are a hedge fund as little money) as possible.
Most of the books in this area are written by so-called experts who try to tell you how to make money. This book is written by someone who is only interested in providing information to others.

Good Informative Read.

This was a quick but useful read. The biggest takeaways for me were the significant legal costs associated with starting and operating a hedge fund, as well as the challenges in generating the necessary capital/investment into the fund that will actually get you on the radar with institutional investors.

Good Read; I should've got it from Kindle Unlimited

Don't make the same mistake I did. Get this on Kindle Unlimited. If the information is interesting to you (and why else would you be reading it), then you should easily be able to finish this in a few hours. I don't see this as being a reference to check every so often, and so I wouldn't have bought it outright if I had thought through the purchase.

But to the book, it is very informative and will give you an idea of the scale of starting a hedge fund. There were lots of unanticipated costs and overhead labor for me, which I will now have to investigate different routes. Depending on what the scale of your fund is planned to be, you may find this more or less informative. My fund is going to be much smaller than the scales that are discussed in this book. I would despise having a six figure lawyer bill each year, for instance. There's gotta be a better way. Good read, though.

About the Author

Stephen Lovett is an associate professor of mathematics at Wheaton College. He is a member of the Mathematical Association of America, American Mathematical Society, and Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. He earned a PhD from Northeastern University. His research interests include commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, cryptography, and discrete dynamical systems.

Fantastic Textbook

I am the type of student that learns math best when working with good textbooks at my own pace, and I must say that this is one of the best textbooks I have ever used. The books opens with some introductory set theory and number theory, and then dives into group, rings, and fields. When new concepts are introduced, Lovett generally gives some historical background and motivating examples that help make the topic more approachable. Lots of theorems and proofs are given in the book and are presented with great clarity.

The exercises at the end of each section vary a lot in terms of difficulty. Some exercises are straightforward, while others are quite creative and require a lot of thought (and time) to solve. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of open-ended projects, some of which are quite interesting. There are also several sections that focus on applications of Abstract Algebra to other disciplines, my favorites being the ones on cryptography and constructable numbers.

In my opinion, some strengths of this book are its clarity, organization, and rigor. The sections are very readable and it is easy to refer back to previous chapters to find key topics, as all theorems and definitions are conveniently boxed.

Though the book does not adopt a "teach by example" approach, the examples are strategically-chosen and are very helpful. I have found that a lot math books tend to present theorems and examples in a way that I have to refer back to the examples to remember what the theorems actually mean. This book, however, does not do that and instead challenges the reader to understand examples in the context of theorems, and not the other way around.

Though I used this book for an introductory Abstract Algebra course, I think it would also be very well-suited for self-study and would be easy to use as a reference book. In summary, this is a great book that will challenge you, and you should buy it if you want to have a rewarding experience learning Abstract Algebra.

If you were exposed to infidelity, please purchase this book

If you're looking into this book and reading this review, chances are you have been devastated by infidelity recently. This book is straight forward and has helped me realize that my feelings towards my wife's infidelity are not only normal, but are something that I can overcome. I was absolutely shocked how the author hit the nail on the head with real world examples of exactly how i feel. I'm not done with the book yet but so far I have not been able to put it down. My wife and I are working on making our marriage work so I am having her read this book with me each night so she can understand my emotions and help herself deal with what lead her to cheat in the first place. This book is perfect- it helps both the hurt partner and the unfaithful partner understand their actions, their reactions to themselves and each other, and how to cope with ending or continuing your marriage.

I was hesitant to purchase this because just reading the title stings a little. It's a terrible reminder of something that should never happen between two loving people. I feel like it takes a bold person to purchase a book like this because it seems so much easier to not think about the things that hurt us. I'm just a regular guy, not endorsed by the publisher or amazon, but I can tell you that the best thing you could do for yourself or your marriage is to add this book to your amazon cart and start healing the right way. Realize that your feelings are common and you're not crazy, irrational, or undesireable as you might think.

What do you have to lose? The book was under ten dollars, cheap in regards to what I believe it's worth. Be strong enough to seek guidance because you are not alone. Good luck.

A light in the pitch black darkness!

Exactly what I needed. I purchased this in spite of some of the negative reviews I saw. I, unlike those individuals, wanted something that I thought would offer the most neutral perspective possible. I felt that continuing to victimize myself was not productive. This book was able to, without blaming me, help me learn how to share the responsibility with my spouse. To me, that feels slightly better than looking at my spouse as this villain. If you are looking for an book we that will solve an affair for you, you won't find one. What this did for me is reaseure me that all the chaos in my mind right now is normal. It out words to feelings I'm having that I couldn't identify myself. It also helped me to think of my spouses feelings and view him as a person instead of a monster. The author does not take sides. That is what I wanted. If you at looking for someone to encourage you to leave your spouse, or to attack your partner's mistakes, this is not the book for you. If you are some or who genuinely wants to try to explore the possibility of working things out or learning to forgive, buy this book now and get started. I read it in 2 days and am now going to read it with my spouse. I am optimistic for the first time since learning that my life was a lie. This was what I needed.

A worthy read for difficult times.

I started reading this book six weeks after my husband admitted his affair. It explained everything I was going through and also gave me insight into my husband's state of mind. The book is not intended to fix your marriage or provide answers, but it will help you direct your thoughts in a positive, productive direction. I am glad I read this book when I did. The most important thing I took away from this book is that feeling insane is normal after you have been deceived. Also the section on stay vs. go gave me some points to think about to decide when trying to decide if I wanted to fix my relationship or leave. The book was easy to read and is insightful for both partners. I recommend it in conjunction with counseling. If you are reading this review, I wish you luck on this painful journey. I also recommend "When Things Fall Apart" by Pema Chodron to help you with your journey to healing from this experience.

Recommended Book for sure!

This is a very wonderful book! Full of colorful pictures and helpful diagrams! I really like the fact that it has pictures of how to position patients for x-rays. I also like that it has pages that give you the image critique guidelines! I only wish that it wasn't so heavy!

Please Don't Laugh - Nearly Life-changing!

I was a too-serious biochemistry pre-med student in 1980 when a dull professor with a dull-sounding class (Computer Modeling of Biological Systems) made me read this book. The writing style is so dry and calculated you can almost hear the language creak and the subject is at the same time simple but difficult to grasp - and no, that's not a contradiction in terms, trust me. But a chapter or two into this book the scales fell from my eyes. I had the true-believer's reaction of, "why doesn't everyone know this!? Why isn't this truth shouted from the rooftops!?" The truth in the book comes mainly from Alan Turing's discoveries in machine theory, a field he basically invented. But the author's achievement is to set forth these ideas, and many others developed later through his work and that of others, in clear, concise words - no mean feat with these subtle but extremely powerful concepts. Previous reviewer David C. Hay hit the nail on the head with his comment that "the insights into the true nature of the way things work are as significant as those of Newton or Einstein". Overstatement? If you are reading this review on a computer (yes, you are), you can thank the concepts in this book - they are that fundamental to the development of computers. As I say, the insights are mostly Turing's, but Ashby lays them out in a way that the dedicated reader of moderate intelligence (like myself, for example: I'm no Alan Turing!) can grasp without too much effort. The book's approach might have been softened to include some historical perspective or more concrete examples, but the author chose to refine his message to a distilled essence as clear and powerful as lightning. While almost all my biochemistry textbooks have become outdated and discarded through new developments in that science this slim volume still sits on my bookshelf - I can see it right now. A 40-year-old book as fresh as the day it was written! Read it at your peril: being exposed to completely novel ideas may change your thinking - or even your life!

One of the most important books I have ever read.

In a very clear, concise manner, Ashby explains the laws of nature that control the way systems work -- all systems, whether they be organisms, corporations, or governments. His insights into the true nature of the way things work are as significant as those of Newton or Einstein.

a landmark in systems thinking

Since its creation as a new field of science, Systems thinking has influenced most other areas, including the fields I'm active in myself, such as psychology and social sciences.
This out-of-print book is considered so important by the people of the Principia Cybernetica Project that they want this book to reach as an wide audience as possible. As their website indicates: "W. Ross Ashby is one of the founding fathers of both cybernetics and systems theory. He developed such fundamental ideas as the homeostat, the law of requisite variety, the principle of self-organization, and the principle of regulatory models."
Of course, nothing goes above getting your hand on a *real* copy of this book, but the next best solution is getting the free e-book version which the Principia Cybernetica Project published on their web site with the agreement of the Ashby estate (the copyright holders). Just search for Principia Cybernetica on the web, and surf from there...
