Things included here that occur in no other book (that we are aware of) are the Fourier series method for entire and mero� morphic functions, a study of integer valued entire functions, the Malliavin� Rubel extension of Carlson's Theorem (the "sampling theorem"), and the first-order theory of the ring of all entire functions, and a final chapter on Tarski's "High School Algebra Problem," a topic from mathematical logic that connects with entire functions. This book grew out of a set of classroom notes for a course given at the University of Illinois in 1963, but they have been much changed, corrected, expanded, and updated, partially for a similar course at the same place in 1993. My thanks to the many students who prepared notes and have given corrections and comments.

It is written at a level which assumes only a reasonable first course in complex analysis and knowledge of some standard results about the representation of linear functionals....The book is divided into 24 relatively short chapters, and, although some of the later material depends on earlier material, the reader who already has some knowledge of the general subject from other sources should be able to go directly to one of the later sections of the book without undue difficulties.

The book is an introduction to the theory of entire and meromorphic functions intended for advanced graduate students in mathematics and for professional mathematicians. The book provides a clear treatment of the Nevanlinna theory of value distribution of meromorphic functions, starting from scratch. It contains the first book-form presentation of the Rubel-Taylor Fourier series method for meromorphic functions and the Miles theorem on efficient quotient representation. It has a concise but complete treatment of the Polya theory of the Borel transform and the conjugate indicator diagram. It contains some of Buck's results on integer-valued entire functions, and the Malliavin-Rubel uniqueness theorem. The book closes with applications to mathematical logic. In particular, the first-order theory of the ring of entire functions is developed and questions concerning identities of exponential functions are studied as in Tarski's "High School Algebra Problems". The approach of the book gets to the heart of the matter without excessive scholarly detours. It prepares the reader for further study of the vast literature on the subject, which is one of the cornerstones of complex analysis.

In their 1982 title Megatrends, Patricia Aburdene and her former husband John Naisbitt talked about the birth of the Information Economy; in Megatrends 2000, published in 1990, they predicted the networked, technology-driven Internet era. The coming megatrend, Aburdene asserts, will not be driven by external, social, or technological forces so much as "the internal dimension of change" that will reinvent free enterprise. And she's predicting that this spiritual megatrend will take firm hold of the American way of business by, say, 2010.

In seven chapters the book identifies the major facets of the new megatrend, including:

A new kind of MegaTrend

I've been a fan of the MegaTrend series since the beginning.. but was apprehensive when I saw that John Naisbitt was not involved in this book.

Even while reading, I kept thinking.. this isn't what I expect from a Megatrends book.

Despite this disconnect.. and especially upon further reflection, I've found that MegaTrend 2010 has indeed followed the major trends and is very appropriate for today.

Amazing research is sited showing that more and more people are expecting good corporate citizenship. Aburdene tells us this proves Milton Friedman wrong "A corporation exists for the benefit of it's shareholders"... though I'd compromise and say that now "A corporation exists to benefit it's shareholder according to their current values"

Besides, several examples are cited where a corporation doing the right thing MAKE MORE PROFIT. That's got to benefit the shareholders.

This is one of the trends. Thought provoking, important issues for our time, and great for planning ahead.

If you're going to be around for a few years... read this book.

Hopeful Megatrends

Megatrends 2010

by Patricia Aburdene

Aburdene writes of Megatrends or "large, over-arching directions that

shape our lives for a decade or more." She says, "changing values and

economics are changing capitalism." She gives examples that convince her

that the world is becoming more compassionate, businesses more

other-oriented and people in general more spiritual." She writes

"Spirituality is the world's greatest megatrend."

She quotes authors Ray and Anderson's book, The Cultural Creatives, as

saying this culture, that of the Cultural Creatives, is 26% of the

population and growing 1% a year. She describes the Cultural Creatives as

folks who value nature, authenticity, spirituality, peace, relationships,

feminism, social justice and social responsibility.

In this book, Aburdene gives as models many companies, businesses and

individuals who are working at making changes from greed and selfishness,

power and materialism to more lasting kinds of satisfaction, to more

gentleness and consideration.

As examples of individuals becoming more conservative in their

materialism she writes about the Green movement in business and industry,

organic and natural food focuses, the CERES Principals, hybrid autos and

many areas where humans can help make huge changes.

I hope she is right. Since she doesn't list any of the many companies

and CEOs who are still into greed and corruption it is not possible for

me to believe that the majority are or will become less self-oriented. I

don't remember her once mentioning the corruption and crookedness of so

many in our officials in government at present or their inattention to those less well off than themselves.

I suggest you read this yourself, and decide whether her view is one that

is acceptable and makes sense to you.

Great booklet

In this booklet, Mike takes the student through a bunch of linear patterns for the drums.
The teaching technique is simple but good. The first line lists out the sticking pattern along with the note structure.

There is a very dominant pattern running through the book, as well. Asking you to get comfortable with the pattern before moving on with it. This can sometimes be a trying process, with great rewards.

Every pattern I've seen throughout the book has asked you for four limbed independence, even if it's just asking you to keep a quarter note pulse with your left foot.

For what my own opinion is worth, this book is a steal of a deal. 30 dollars is a light cost for what going through Linear Drumming by Mike Johnston has done for my drumming.

This is a very straight forward but very effective drumming book presented in a easy to read and learn fashion. Fantastic, will certainly increase your drumming ability.

No proofreading; read at your own risk!

Compared to my peers, I didn't mind the writing or how the book approached concepts. I found it decent to read, while some people I know were adamantly against this book. So, in terms of writing style and content, there have been varied perception of the book, with mostly negative comments. I am not usually too picky about this stuff, so if you're like me, then you'd be fine with that.

HOWEVER.

Did the publishers even bother to PROOFREAD this book!? I do not mean simple things like grammar, punctuation, etc. No. I'm talking the kind of typoes that will make you fail an exam. Almost half of the diagrams, tables, or charts are WRONG. For instance, in the chapter on symmetry, the table would say that there are 2 symmetries in a certain point group, when there are in fact 3 symmetries. Now this is a big deal; when you're sitting here studying the tables trying to understand how symmetry works, you do not want to be wondering if you or the book is right, but that's the guessing game you play with this book. Nobody bothered to check the numbers. Simple things like the numbers are backwards or the table has a typo or the fact that almost every single equal sign has been replaced with a giant scribbled square is extremely frustrating.

Unfortunately there has been no published update on the massive amounts of typoes; it's as if the publishers are pushing the limits on how much students will pay for a garbage education.

Good illustrations, but not the best textbook available

Used this book for a graduate level inorganic course. Informative but not the best book available on the subject. It was the first semester my professor used this book and she was quite disappointed and often gave us handouts from other textbooks. Also, the chapter on symmetry is not very well written.

The illustrations however, are very good which is why I gave it 3 stars rather than 2.

Dan Kalman has been writing about and teaching mathematics for 30 years. A graduate of Harvey Mudd College (BS, 1974) and the University of Wisconsin (PhD, 1980), he is a Professor of Mathematics at American University, Washington, DC. Kalman's mathematical writing has been recognized with multiple MAA awards: Allendoerfer Awards in 1998 and 2002, Polya Awards in 1994 and 2002, and an Evans Award in 1997.
