About the Author
ROBERTSON McQUILKIN served as the third president of Columbia International University from 1968 to 1990 and currently serves as the president emeritus. He resigned from the presidency to care for his wife, Muriel, who had reached the stage of Alzheimer�s disease in which she needed full-time care. Prior to coming president of CIU, McQuilkin served as headmaster of Ben Lippen School, then for 12 years as a missionary in Japan. McQuilkin�s writings have appeared in numerous journals and periodicals. Among the books he has published are Understanding and Applying the Bible, Five Smooth Stones, Life in the Spirit, A Promise Kept, An Introduction to Biblical Ethics, and The Great Omission. In 2003 McQuilkin married Deborah Jones Sink. Between them, Robertson and Deborah have nine children.

An Hermeneutical Toolbox

I have read...so many books on biblical interpretation and hermeneutics that sometimes, I thought my brain would explode. Not because I am so well-read, but because some were so scholarly and theoretical (hermeneutics is a deep and detailed subject) that they were practically ineffective for personal Bible study or sermon preparation. And others were so trendy and innovative, trying to make God's Word "relevant" to "contemporary generations" that I wondered about their trustworthiness. Well, right in the sweet spot in the middle is the aptly-named "Understanding and Applying the Bible," and the title truly matches the contents. I was privileged to sit in J. R. McQuilkin's lecture while he was "beta-testing" (so to speak) his notes for this book in the hermeneutics class at CIU years ago. I believe that what I learned there set a firm, theologically-conservative foundation for one to handle the Scriptures with devotion, care and respect, and to avoid novel or overly-subjective interpretations.

"Understanding and Applying the Bible" treats the Bible as if it is indeed the very Word of God. Faith in the God of the Bible is assumed, as is the inerrancy and harmony of Scripture, and therefore the principle of Scripture interpreting Scripture. (This is quite important, and is also rarer than one might think, as scholarly works are generally expected to be neutral about such issues. You can read this book with confidence that the author is not trying to introduce some "new perspective" of his in an area of devotion or doctrine.) And instead of dealing with hermeneutics in an ivory-tower vacuum (to mix my metaphors), valuable and reliable help is given to the pastor preparing sermons, or anyone who wants to read and understand (and apply!) the Scriptures. I highly recommend Dr. McQuilkin's book to you. Its value has only increased since it was first written, given the post-modern excesses of some current church movements. In my opinion, if the student of God's Word could own only one book on interpreting the Scriptures, this would be the one. May the Lord bless and guide you as you study His Word.

Excellent Introduction to Hermeneutics

In this book, McQuilkin has provided a sound, well-balanced introduction to hermeneutics suitable for Bible College or seminary instruction. It is practical, thorough, and well organized, yet is clearly written in plain language suitable for the average reader.

McQuilkin addresses the primary concerns of biblical interpretation such as historical and cultural setting, word study, thought structure, context, figurative language, the various genres of literature, interpretation, and application. He provides principles and supporting guidelines to help the believer properly determine precisely what Scripture means and how God intends for us to apply His revealed will.

This is an excellent resource for anyone who needs to understand exegesis. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for an introductory text.

Great reference book!

I've been in the field for a few years now and I finally found a book that explains and summarizes the forecasting theory so good. This is my reference book now. I use it to teach my engineers in the subject and for personal reference as well. It provides new information that wasn't available 10 years ago. The explanaitions are good and the examples clear.

This book has the formulas.

Chapters 3 and 4, and on covered the vital information that is useful for inventory system forecasting at the SKU level, and for measuring the accuracy of the forecasts. This book was extremely helpful in that regard. Highly recommended.

A good primer to recent Korean Cinema

I have been interested in Korean cinema ever since I worked in Korea as an ESL teacher. My first Korean DVD purchases were Shiri and JSA, which I brought more for novelty and and as a momento of Korea than anything else, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised at the production values of both these movies. As a result, I have become a firm fan of Korean movies, and have added a number of titles to my DVD collection. This book will help me select some more good titles to add to the collection.

"Korean Cinema" fulfills a useful niche as it is basically a primer for Korean movies from 1998 to 2002 for newcomers to Korean cinema. The author reviews and rates a number of the movies made in this time span, from "Attack the Gas Station" through to "2009: Lost Memories", plus a couple of titles a couple of years older. The author also rates and discusses 10 Korean movies from that time period which he rates as must sees. It would be a good start for building a DVD collection. There is also a section devoted to the major personalities of the Korean movie industry, actors and directors. It is illustrated but only in black and white, and many of the pictures are of poor quality.

Ignore the low rating reviews of this book - the reviewers obviously brought this book expecting a serious textbook of Korean cinema, which if you actually read the advertising blurb for the book, it is most certainly not. There are books out there discussing the full history of Korean cinema, but make no mistake, this book is not one of them. It is strictly for the newcomers to the genre, and who has little knowledge of the Korean movie industry. It does have a chapter on the history of the industry in Korea, but it is only superficial, and it isn't the reason I brought the book anyway.

Especially ignore the twit who is critical of the author basing his movie reviews on english subtitles. Korean is a particularly difficult language to learn and to become sufficiently competent in the language to be able to follow a Korean movie without english subtitles is beyond the abilities of all but the most dedicated of people. The author of "Korean Cinema" does make it quite clear he is only a recent convert, and thus a beginner, in Korean movies.

This book would lend itself to an update every 3 or 4 years or so. There has been some considerably significant Korean movie releases since this book was first published, not least of which is "Tae-Guk-Gi". I also recommend checking out the website [...] which has movie reviews, talent profiles and other useful informative articles. The author of the site, Darcy Paquet, is listed in the bibliography of "Korean Cinema" a number of times.

Very informative and worth while reading on Korean Cinema from the late 1990's to the early 2000's. Lots of reviews that will inspire you to seek out some excellent movies. Prime has a great selection of Korean films.

Although J. Donald Walters was raised as an Episcopalian, he was later initiated into an Indian monastic order and took the spiritual name, Swami Kriyananda. Through his teaching he challenges the reader to attain a deeper form of belief. He often contrasts real spirituality with the outward show of pomp and ceremony.

The author encourages a deeper understanding of what you believe. It is not enough to say you believe, you must "live out your faith."

I've been very impressed with his "Secrets of" series. They are little books that can really help you change the way you are thinking so you can be more successful, peaceful or fulfilled as a human being living on this uncertain planet.

In all the uncertainty, J. Donald Walters brings us to some of the most important ideas Jesus taught and compares them with teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. Walters explains the Bible in ways you can't even imagine are possible. Yet, in the end it makes complete sense. I loved his explanation of how God is the "Word."

J. Donald Walters says that everything in this book is consistent with Paramhansa Yoganda's actual writing, so he says it is not really his book, but rather a disciples attempt to present his guru's teachings in a way as to reach a wider audience. Yogananda's mission is to show the underlying oneness of the Holy Bible and the Bhagavad Gita.

The Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Krishna (representing God) and Arjuna (a devotee/aspirant toward divine union). I was amazed by the sheer poetic beauty of the text.

Most of the book does seem to focus on the teachings of Christ. It is important to note that the author believes in reincarnation. Rather interesting theories on this subject. He also has some thoughts on Astrology and its origins. There are ideas you may accept or reject, however the explanations are always entertaining and often enlightening.

He talks about the Divine Consciousness which is the true life which enlightens human minds and speaks of a time where there will be more cooperation's between the world's religions. He seems to promote a unity of all religious beliefs and explains how the quest for divine truth is the essence of all religions.

The fate of the doomed American defenders was sealed when the Japanese won the battle for the islands in the spring of 1942.

The exploits of the unit were immortalized in the blockbuster 1945 movie They Were Expendable, starring John Wayne and Robert Montgomery, but since then the saga of Bulkeley and his men has slipped into history. Under a Blood Red Sun revives the story of the Philippine PT-boats through the intertwined accounts of Bulkeley and his subordinate officers and men. It is a story of the courage and sacrifice of men thousands of miles from their homeland, representing American gallantry and fighting prowess, while giving the Japanese a taste of what was further to come their way.

Diane calls her best friend, Julie, to tell her that Mick likes her and that she should try to attract his attention. Miscommunication is the plot device, so Julie ends up telephoning the wrong Mick--superjock Mick Wilson, who isn't interested in her at all. Each chapter begins as one of the characters telephones another. Occasionally it will be difficult for readers to distinguish one character's dialogue from another. However, the story is well constructed, and readers will enjoy the excellent character development (even the parents are funny). All's well that ends well . . . I really liked this book, It is all phone conversations between these kids. It is alot different than most of R.L.s books but is still really good. I thought it was amusing and humorus ( I can't spell ) the way they kept getting back at each other. A FUn ReaD!

In the book Phone Calls by R.L.Stine is about two best friends who gets into a fight. Now their an arguing pack. Julie needs to straighten everything out. Now Ramar an exchange student calls Julie and asks her out. Now Julie has to find a
way to get out of her with Ramar.
Anyone who likes to read can read this book. I recommend Phone Calls to anyone who likes to talk on phone and know how to solve problems. Also if you read this book you might get to know what the author is trying to say. You should read this book because it has an amazing background to the story. This book should keep you out of trouble.

This book is mainly about a kid who thought that Mick the football player liked her so she went over to his house and acted like she was interviewing him for the school newspaper. But really she wasn't. There was a big confusion about this so people got back at each other by hooking them up with ther people. To find out what happened and to be so intrested in it like I was, buy the book and I promise that you will enjoy it.

About the Author
JIM KILLAM has been a journalist for more than 30 years -- including stints as a newspaper reporter and editor, a college media adviser, and a missionary journalist. Currently he is Story Director for the Seed Company, a Wycliffe affiliate. Jim and his wife, Lauren, live in Texas, though their Midwestern accents give them away quickly. They have three grown children and two grandchildren. Go Tell It is Jim's third book, and has led to training opportunities on three continents.

LINCOLN BRUNNER has been a journalist for 22 years. After cutting his teeth as a sportswriter and general assignment reporter in central Wisconsin in the early 90s, he went on to edit a small daily paper in Illinois. He then served as an editor for several trade magazines. In 2004, he felt a strong call to do full-time reporting about Christian missions work and went on to report on missionaries around the world for two different missions organizations. These days, he works as managing editor for a Bible translation organization. Lincoln and his wonderful wife, Ann, have three daughters and live in Texas.

Very practical book for journalists

I spent 23 years as a full-time professional journalist and I wish there had been a GO TELL IT when I began. (First a disclaimer: I wrote the Foreword before reading the book)The book is wonderfully practical, very humorous and honest and brings home one of the first lessons of good reporting: Treat people with dignity, even if you don't like them. You'll get a much better story if you do.

Luke practiced excellent journalism - cool.

I’m still in the middle of reading, but my favorite part so far is the chapter describing how Luke practiced excellent journalism. For Luke to provide the kind of stories in his Gospel and Acts with the amount of interesting detail and color and human interest, he must have done a lot of research and interviewed lots of people and asked numerous questions, etc. This is a great insight and a fitting part of this book that wants to help train more people to go tell God’s stories like Luke.

And even though this is a kind of "how to" book, it also reads like a story. How did they do that? As two field journalists, I guess they have well demonstrated their trade.

How do you express the emotions and change of heart that a short term mission trip can have on you?
This is a struggle not only for myself but many people I have traveled with.
Go Tell It explains how to write when you're not a writer, how to interview when you are not a journalist, how to take photos when you are not a photographer, and how to share this with others once you have done it.

It has inspired me to "go tell it", and given me the tools to "do it".
