The second chapter is entitled "Some Optimal Control Techniques"; its intent is to introduce fundamental concepts of optimal control theory that are relevant to the applications treated in the following chapters. Emphasis is given to clear, methodical development rather than rigorous formal proofs. Topics discussed include variational calculus, Pontryagin's maximum principle, and geometric methods employing functional analysis. A number of solved examples are included to illustrate the techniques.

The "usual" (wonderful) gallery of beautiful images

I lost this issue at the original release date (I started to buy the Spectrum series from issue 7). What I noticed, buying the latest printings of number 1,2, 3 and now 4 is that, except the digital techniques (now more advanced than in the past), the quality of the works collected is always the same. Excellent.

Pure magic.

Almost any one of the pieces in this collection is worth the price of the book. There are no monkey swathes of paint against white canvas here, my friends. No, here are works that will quicken your breath, accelerate your heartbeat, and ignite the synapses in your mind. And as my fellow reviewer commented, this book is a wellspring of inspiration. Just flip the pages and see for your self. Works like "Number 16" and "Prudence II" present this point more eloquently than I ever could. I have only one pique. There was no art from any of the Galerie Morpheus artists like Giger, Yerka, and De Es. Despite this, I urge all fans of SF and Fantasy art to buy this book. You won't be dissappointed.

Philip Lambert is Professor of Music at Baruch College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He is the author of Alec Wilder; To Broadway, To Life! The Musical Theater of Bock and Harnick; Inside the Music of Brian Wilson: The Songs, Sounds, and Influences of the Beach Boys' Founding Genius; and The Music of Charles Ives. Introducci�n a las computadoras personales

La compa��a IBM introdujo al mercado la primera computadora personal el 12 de agosto de 1981. Pero debido a su alto costo, al principio comprar una computadora personal era s�lo un sue�o para la mayor�a de los hogares en los Estados Unidos.

Una computadora personal es un conjunto de piezas electr�nicas, o hardware, que, combinadas con programas, o software, hacen de �sta una de las herramientas de conocimiento m�s �tiles creadas por el hombre. Estas piezas son ensambladas, en el caso de las computadoras personales IBM PC compatibles, por centenares de compa��as alrededor del mundo.

Hoy en d�a es posible comprar una computadora personal del tipo IBM PC compatible por menos de 1.000 d�lares, con la ventaja adicional de ser mucho m�s r�pida que una computadora que pudo haber comprado por m�s del doble el a�o anterior.

La computadora en la siguiente gr�fica es una Dell Dimension 8400 Series, equipada con un procesador Intel Pentium 4.

A pesar de que esta computadora usa uno de los procesadores m�s avanzados hoy en d�a, su precio es menos de 2.000 d�lares.


Las diferencias entre una computadora del tipo IBM compatible y una del tipo Macintosh

Los dos tipos de computadoras personales m�s usados son las IBM compatible y las del tipo Macintosh. En este libro hablaremos de las computadoras de tipo IBM compatible por el hecho de que �stas representan casi el 90 por ciento del mercado de computadoras personales.

Tambi�n es importante subrayar que aunque las Macintosh son s�lo fabricadas por la compa��a Apple, las IBM compatible son fabricadas por un sinn�mero de compa��as diferentes alrededor del mundo.

Las computadoras IBM compatibles y las Macintosh son muy f�ciles de diferenciar. Las diferencias principales son:

La mayor�a de las IBM compatibles usan procesadores fabricados por compa��as como Intel y AMD.

Las computadoras del tipo IBM compatible usan sistemas operativos como Windows y Linux.

Las computadoras personales fabricadas por la compa��a Apple llevan un procesador llamado PowerPC fabricado por la compa��a Motorola.

Las computadoras personales del tipo Macintosh usan un sistema operativo gr�fico, dise�ado por la compa��a Apple, llamado System 9.0.

Las computadoras personales del tipo Macintosh tambi�n se distinguen por usar un rat�n con un solo bot�n.


Las computadoras del tipo IBM compatible

Este es el tipo de computadora que se une a los protocolos de la primera computadora fabricada por la compa��a IBM pero con todos los adelantos modernos.

Hoy en d�a muchas compa��as fabrican computadoras del tipo IBM compatible, como Dell o Gateway, y tambi�n es posible ensamblar una computadora usando piezas de diferentes compa��as.

La siguiente gr�fica representa una computadora personal del tipo IBM compatible.

Como puede ver en la gr�fica anterior, una computadora personal tiene que ser complementada con algo llamado un sistema operativo, como el sistema operativo Microsoft Windows Me.

La gran mayor�a de computadoras personales de tipo IBM utilizan procesadores fabricados por tres compa��as. Estos a su vez vienen en diferentes velocidades de reloj, o MHz:

Intel: sin lugar a dudas esta es la compa��a que vende la mayor�a de los procesadores para computadoras de tipo IBM compatible.

AMD: los procesadores de esta compa��a se pueden encontrar en algunas computadoras de la marca Compaq.

Transmeta: una compa��a nueva cuyos procesadores se est�n empezando a ver en algunas computadoras port�tiles.


Las computadoras del tipo Macintosh

Este tipo de computadora ha sido fabricado por la compa��a Apple desde 1985. Hoy en d�a su producci�n constituye casi el 10 por ciento del mercado de las computadoras personales. Sobre todo, su enfoque empresarial se centra en surtir sistemas escolares de computadoras buenas.

Esta compa��a siempre ha tratado de estar en la vanguardia de todas las nuevas tecnolog�as y esto les ha permitido sobrevivir en este ambiente de mucha competencia.

Las Macintosh usan un rat�n con un solo bot�n y un procesador fabricado por la compa��a Motorola llamado PowerPC. Tambi�n requieren el sistema operativo System 9.0.

En la gr�fica anterior se puede ver un PowerBook G4 de solamente 1 pulgada de grosor y con una pantalla de 15,2 pulgadas. Es port�til, s�lo pesa 5,3 libras y est� construido casi totalmente de titanio.


�Qu� tipo de computadora personal le conviene comprar?

Esta es una de las preguntas que m�s me hac�an cuando trabajaba como vendedor de computadoras. Esta secci�n ser� muy �til para las personas que necesitan un poco de ayuda con esta decisi�n. Primero que nada, tiene que pensar para qu� necesita la computadora. Segundo, debe calcular cu�nto puede invertir.

Hoy en d�a es casi seguro afirmar que cualquier computadora que compre tendr� suficiente memoria y la cantidad adecuada de dispositivos necesarios para que la mayor�a de la gente pueda sacarles provecho, y que adem�s, esten satisfechos con la compra.

Los siguientes son los elementos que se deben tomar en cuenta, en orden de importancia, si la computadora que piensa comprar es al menos una Pentium 4:

1.Cantidad de memoria RAM

2.Espacio en el disco duro

3.Tama�o del monitor

4.Unidad de crear los CD ("CD Writer") o los DVD (“DVD writer”)

Por ejemplo, si puede escoger entre m�s RAM, debe considerar comprar una computadora con al menos 128 MB de RAM. Esto es preferible a tener un disco con una capacidad mayor de 20 GB. A menos que su trabajo sea el de editar pel�culas digitales, en este caso puede necesitar m�s de 128 MB de RAM y un disco de m�s capacidad.

Tambi�n considere que actualmente se est�n usando mucho unidades para crear los CD y �stas son sumamente �tiles para hacer copias.

Hoy en d�a debe considerar comprar una computadora con al menos 512MB de RAM y un disco duro con al menos 60 GB de capacidad, ya que los archivos creados por ciertos equipos, como c�maras digitales y esc�neres (dependiendo del uso que usted les d�) pueden ocupar mucho espacio en un disco duro.

Tambi�n tenga en cuenta que hoy en d�a se est�n usando muchas unidades para crear los DVD (es decir, quemadores de DVD+/-RW de doble lado), que son sumamente �tiles para hacer copias de seguridad de pel�culas de DVD. Por este motivo conviene conseguir una computadora que incluya una unidad de este tipo.

Mientras escrib�a este libro, encontr� en el Internet dos paquetes de computadoras (del tipo IBM compatible) de dos marcas muy conocidas, Dell y HP. En la siguiente gr�fica puede ver estas dos ofertas. La de la izquierda es una computadora Dell Dimension 4700 y la de la derecha es una HP Pavillion a1050y, pero con casi las mismas especificaciones.

Si compara estas computadoras componente por componente, ver� que son muy similares. Tampoco difieren mucho en cuanto al precio. Aunque el paquete de la derecha (HP Pavilion a1050y) cuesta casi 100 d�lares m�s, le ofrece un poco m�s equipo. Pero si le gusta m�s una Dell y paga un poco m�s por �sta, podr� conseguir una configuraci�n muy similar por un precio parecido.

Estas son las diferencias m�s importantes de estos dos paquetes que cuestan casi lo mismo:

La HP tiene un disco duro de mayor capacidad, que es muy �til si toma muchas fotos con una c�mara digital.

En este paquete la Dell incluye un monitor, y en el paquete de la HP �ste es un cargo extra.

En el paquete de la HP le ofrecen una actualizaci�n gratis a una unidad de quemar DVDs, y tal vez por este motivo este paquete cuesta m�s que el de la Dell.

Tambi�n es importante considerar las recomendaciones de amigos o familiares. Si ellos le recomiendan que compre una Dell —por haber tenido una buena experiencia con esta excelente compa��a— entonces �ste puede que sea el mejor camino a tomar.

Adem�s, si le alcanza el presupuesto y tiene un negocio peque�o, es muy recomendable que consiga una unidad de crear los DVD, ya que �stos son muy �tiles para hacer copias de seguridad tanto de sus pel�culas como de su disco duro.

Great starter guide for the spanish speaking family member

My mom finally decided to take the plunge and invested in a brand new laptop. Seeing as she speaks Spanish as her 1st language, that made me her default tech support guy. This books the very basics. Thankfully it goes a little deeper and now my mom can us this as general reference/jumping off point to do stuff online suck as organize her email; use Amazon, Ebay and Facebook; and even simple troubleshooting tips. I wold highly recommend this as the best option out there that I could find for Spanish speakers. Hopefully, the ...for Dummies series comes out with more Spanish editions, but for now this is great

Third Edition good

I have used the third edition as a classroom reference book and teaching aid. The sample Kindle text available here is from the second edition, which of course is only able to have the older info. The third edition covers up to Windows Vista and pertinent info for earlier versions.

Overall it is a good book covering nearly anything one needs to know to accomplish basics and beyond in Windows and the basics of understanding hardware and software, and how it all works.

About the Author
Mira Mehta MPhil (Oxon), AAPA, is known as a leading expert on Yoga with a rounded proficiency in philosophy, postures, therapy yoga and teacher training. She is at the forefront of developing the understanding of Yoga theory and has written four Yoga guides translated into many languages. She, together with her brother Shyam, began Yoga as children with world renowned guru BKS Iyengar. Their mother, Silva Mehta, was an early and principal pupil of Iyengar and ran UK government Yoga teacher training courses in the 1970’s which projected Yoga into a mainstream activity. Well known as a Yoga family, their bestseller “Yoga: the Iyengar Way” has been highly influential throughout the world, inspiring countless people. As an adult Mira studied annually in India with BKS Iyengar for over 20 years and also spent 3 years there deepening her practice and pursuing postgraduate studies in Yoga philosophy and theory (with Prof KS Arjunwadkar) as well as in Ayurveda. She has an MPhil in classical Indian Religion and Sanskrit from Oxford University, an Advanced Yoga Teaching Certificate from BKS Iyengar, and a Diploma in Ayurveda (Basic) from TM University in Pune, India. Therapeutic yoga from a very experienced teacher

I slipped a disc in my back through Ashtanga yoga and wanted to avoid surgery at all costs. Much as I enjoyed Ashtanga yoga classes, it's easy to get injured and doesn't help your recovery if you have an injury. I had some osteopathy which helped somewhat and had 3 months of physiotherapy, but I was still getting sciatic pains down my left leg, my left foot was numb and I had difficultly walking. In fact I think the physio was making it worse.

I missed doing yoga, it really helped with reducing stress, increased mental clarity and was great exercise. The first book I bought on Yoga 20 years ago was the classic 'Yoga: The Iygengar Way', written by Mira Mehta. I came across her other books 'Health Through Yoga' and 'How to use Yoga', which have beneficial yoga sequences for specific conditions, in my case bad backs. I found out Mira Mehta runs a Therapy Yoga class at her yoga school in West Hampstead (The Yogic Path) and went along. I've been having yoga therapy classes with Mira for 6 months, reading her books and practising every morning before work and have noticed - a massive improvement. The pains in my legs have gone, there's still some numbness in the foot but most of time I don't notice it. I feel relaxed and healthy. I have a stressful job - the yoga keeps my sane and helps my back.

I strongly recommend the book, if you want to find out more about the therapeutic benefits of yoga.

A lovely comprehensive yet simple book on all aspects of health, yoga and Ayurveda

Health through Yoga is a wonderful book.
It gives a simple and yet complete guide to the ancient Indian science of medicine, Ayurveda. This is the best guide to Ayurveda that I have seen.
Next, in a very methodical fashion it deals with all the various physical, physiological and mental health issues that we can face, from a yoga perspective. It gives clear illustrations for all the yoga remedies suggested and precise simple instructions as to how to do the yoga postures.
Finally it gives a nice introduction to Yoga philosophy and the purpose of life.
I thoroughly recommend this book for all people who are interested in yoga, Ayurveda, the subject of health or more specifically if you want to solve particular health issues of yours in a holistic fashion.

The Book have three parts. In the first, main health principles of Ayurveda are explained, in the second part, there are explained many Yoga postures and Yogic breathing exercises, with pictures, for the purpose of maintaining good physical health, and the third part deals with the mental health, where you can read passages, chosen from the ancient works, that illustrate the Yogic approach to life situations and problems.

The book contains health principles, derived from Yoga and Ayurveda, that are clearly explained. The book is easy to read and understand.

Surprising, wonderful coming of age story

This is a fine, moving book masquerading as a strange punch line. While the title sounds like a joke, the book tells the true story of an alienated young American finding himself while a teenage exchange student living 200 miles north of the arctic circle in Norway. Written honestly and with great heart, we have the privilege of watching the small town Norwegians help the author grow up and find himself, love and friendship in the land of the midnight sun.

This book will appeal to many, but not to all. Certainly to those who have traveled far from home to live and make a life in another country. Possibly to young people struggling through their own growing pains who would like to hear inside the thoughts of someone who remembers what it was like to be one of them, and is willing to share the reality. Certainly to anyone who cares to travel inside the head of a perceptive person while they go through a transforming experience.
