Excellent, useful, practical cases in clinical ethics.

This is an excellent, practical survey of the main areas of clinical ethics. I've used the seventh, and now eighth, edition for the past several years in teaching a course in clinical and research ethics at the University of California, Irvine. The cases are clearly presented, and representative of what physicians really encounter in clinical practice. The comments and recommendations following each case are thoughtful, well-considered and appealing. In class, we read the case out loud, and the class responds to the case with their own comments and anecdotes about related cases, or raise relevant questions.

This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.

Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics.

I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.

Mostly common sense and bloated

This book has some decent information on conflict resolution, but for the most part is little more than common sense. While it can be important and helpful to emphasize simple fundamentals, some of the generic advice such as "be yourself" is lacking in inspiration. My biggest complaint though, is even when this book does make good points it's bogged down by unneeded length. I wouldn't be the first to recommend this one.

I found this to be check list heavy for example--"Do you often get along at work y/n?" You get the point. It does not improve skills much. Not helpful. I find watching body language can be a more positive way to study people.

ARABIAN MARRIAGE

KINSHIP AND MARRIAGE IN EARLY ARABIA is an important source book which ,although published as far back as 1913 is still referred to in modern studies on this subject for its careful and exhaustive scholarship. Its importance lies not only in its systematic documentation of marriage patterns in Pre-Islamic Arabia, but perhaps more significantly, in tracing which marriage practices have survived in Islam, and which have been banned by it. For instance, Islam has banned Polyandry - a wife having more than one husband - which was precticed in Pre-Islamic times. Islam also banned marriage by "Mut'aa" - pleasure- wherby a man can marry for just a short period - a day and night, a few days , a week, etc.. which Islam condemned as a form of prostitution although "mut'aa" marriage still survives in parts of the Shi'ite world, notably in Iran. But Islam has also retained several Pre-Islamic marriage practices, such as procedures for asking for a woman's hand in marriage - "khutba", and the protocols associated with it such as what is said when the prospective husband's family approaches that of the woman who is asked for in marriage. Also, the pre-Islamic practice of the woman having a say in accepting or rejecting a suitor is also practiced in Islam, although there are cases in the most backward Muslim societies wherby a woman is forced to accept the husband her family chooses for her. Pre-Islamic divorce practises have also largely been retained by Islam. All these issues, and very many more which lack of space prevents from mentioning are dealt with in detail in this scholarly work.

concise, informative

This book is a nice introduction for the layperson to the history of ertotic art. It gives the background, but doesn't go over the average person's head. Some very nice art in here, though i think most of the poetry and some of the prose wasn't all that great. i do wish that lucie-smith had put the art of those he talked about in the text together, so that the reader can see an example of what he is discussing.

Varied and enjoyable

Any book that undertakes a history of erotic art, all of it, has undertaken a monumental task. Although this collection falls short in many ways, it still provides a broad survey of many eras, areas of the world, and artists. Organized by topic, this starts with "Sex in the Head" (mind, that is, not restroom), simply nudity of him and her, and classical themes, then moves on through couples of all sorts, solo activity, and more, on up to the edge of kinkiness. Although it covers a wide range of sexual activity and fantasy, many readers will appreciate that it stops short of the truly dark or bizarre.

Within its range, the editor presents a noteworthy range of artistic styles. These include old and not-so-old masters of the Western canon: Rubens and Rembrandt, Manet and Morisot, Titian and Tintoretto, Degas and Donatello, as well as more modern works from Picasso, Magritte, and Gill, on up to Mappelthorpe and Stefan May. The media cover a wide range, too, including woodcut, pencil, oils, and Schiele's nervous watercolors. Eastern artists receive their due, as well, including some of Hokusai's more baffling shunga and anonymous works from previous centuries in India and China.

Throughout, the editor has chosen texts to go with the artworks, including passages from Anais Nin, "Fanny Hill," Walt Whitman, and e.e. cummings. As with the imagery, quotations from lesser-known creators appears, too, and broaden the perspective. The editor starts each chapter with a page or two of his own commentary and perspective - I confess a favoritism for primary sources, however, and usually just dived right into the the collections of print and paint. Even if they don't always evoke strong feelings, these works present a broad experience in intellect and esthetics, but always with a happy connection to the body.

Absolutely incredible compilation of beautiful art, poetry, and history fill this book. If you like history and art and sex you'll appreciate this book that is filled with wonderful photographs, sculpture, oils, acrylics, and more surrounded by poetry that illustrates beautifully the history being described. Whether it be masturbation, prostitution, lesbianism, bliss in the wedding chamber, or other physical acts of love, you will not only find it stunning but fascinating as well.

2 Year Old Daughter Loves It!

Great quality, perfect for our 2 year old daughter who loves Dora and anything tiny. We got this book pretty much only for the 12 mini figures it comes with, not for a high quality book. The book just has a few pages plus a fold out "play" poster that you can play with the figures on top of, although my daughter doesn't use it and instead carries the figures around in a little pocket book. The figures include Dora, her parents and grandmother, Tico, Boots, Map, Swiper, the Troll and a few other figures whose names I forget but who my kids knew exactly who they were from the show. The quality of the little figures is fine, just as good as any typical toy store figure, only in a more miniature size. A big hit in our house, along with a few others of these storybooks.

Must be supervised! My two year old granddaughter loves this book especially the figures, she carries around all day.
But beware they are very small, must be watched when playing with as to not be put in mouths.
